other parts of the world, families gather. Ornaments and employees to participate in these festivals
are similar in Europe and America, food, drink, music, dance and custom of giving. But Spanish
Christmas is a unique celebration with different customs and traditions that reflect the true character
of Spain.
December 24, Christmas Eve
Is the day that is celebrated (according to the Catholic religion) on the eve the birth of Jesus
During the Christmas Eve dinner with family and after dinner they eat Christmas sweets (nougat,
marzipan, polvorón ...) and sing carols.
The typical dishes of this special dinner are seafood, fish (sea bream, sea bream, sea bass, hake),
pork, lamb, turkey, ham ... although they vary from one region to another. Taken to drink wine,
cider, and cava (Spanish sparkling wine produced by the method champanoise, like French
champagne).
It is an opportunity for families who do not live close meet.
On this night we celebrate the traditional "Midnight Mass" at 12 pm. It was common for family
members together to attend the midnight mass. According to tradition, this animal was the first to
witness the birth of Jesus and proclaim to the world. The more religious families tend to attend this
mass.
December 25, Christmas
This day commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ in Belen
Christmas Day is celebrated with a meal like Christmas dinner, and usually takes place or in the
same house where they celebrated Christmas Eve, or the home of another relative. The meal is
followed by a long dinner.
28 DECEMBER, THE DAY OF THE HOLY INNOCENTS
This festival has its roots in a very bloody event, the killing of children who made the King Herod
in Judea, although nowadays the custom is to spend a joke to friends or relatives.
On this day the newspapers often publish news or unbelievable and absurd TV does the same.
3. 31 DECEMBER, NEW YEAR'S EVE
The last day of the year to celebrate the New Year. After dinner on December 31, according to
tradition, at 12 o'clock at night, take the 12 grapes of luck in the Puerta del Sol in Madrid or
watching television.
The grapes are taken, one by one, to the sound of each of the 12 chimes that mark the end of the
year. Then people welcomed the New Year with champagne kissing and giving (sometimes cider).
According to tradition, those who eat the grapes will have 12 months of prosperity during the
coming year (coming).

THE TWELVE GRAPES
New Year's Eve does not have the family nature of Christmas Eve. Some people eat dinner at home,
but others do in restaurants offering dinner and dancing. This is called "cotillion."
Young people celebrate holidays with friends or go out for drinks.
The celebrations often last all night and the next day is celebrated New Year's meal at home.
