Norway celebrates Christmas with traditional foods like pinnekjott, a smoked or dried rib of lamb, along with ham and turkey. Decorating the Christmas tree with hearts, angels, gnomes and stars is a common tradition, as is singing around the tree with family and stuffed animals. While Santa is known as Julenissen, the historical tradition was to believe in Nisse, a protective elf-like creature that rewarded good farming and played tricks on those who farmed poorly, with some people leaving him porridge.
