2. What materials does the artist use to create their sculptures?
Chris Pilmore is an artist who uses recycled materials to create “Eco Art”. He
creates a range of creatures made from, tyres, plywood and any thing he can find.
He has no artistic qualifications. He believes that his work should reflect him.
Chris left school at the age of 16. He left to work for his family. He worked in the coal
mines of The East Midlands.
At the age of 36 he stopped working for his family. He left to pursue his life long love
of creativity.
3. Why is this artist interested in creating
environmentally friendly works? What
inspired the artist?
He uses reclaimed materials because he believes we all have a part to play in to
reduce our impact on the environment.
He says “why buy new materials when there are perfectly good ones waiting to be
reused elsewhere”?
He loves giving new life to old materials.
4. Does the artist have a purpose for creating their sculptures?
Chris wants to show the world that old unused pieces of rubbish can be made into
something wonderful.
He made the choice to work as much as possible to use recycled or reclaimed
materials. Normally materials that are discarded or burned.
5. Analyse the message of two of
their sculptures!
Chris Pilmore chooses to create art that represents living things, such as: Dragons,
Dinosaurs, Insects, Birds, crocodile, plants and flowers.
I think the reason he does this is because he wants to show that if people are not
Eco-friendly it can harm or kill living things, such as animals or plants. The impact on
people not being eco-friendly is the rubbish is taking over and harming nature.
I also think, that he believes when unused materials are thrown away they become
rubbish. When something is thrown away it can be thought of as dead, so he uses
the materials to give them new life. The materials are used to make art representing
nature.
6. How were the sculptures
created ? What’s the process?
The monster is made entirely
out of recycled materials,
including 20 tyres which he
found in hedges and is
coloured with old inkjet
cartridges.
Mutha has come to highlight the waste we
produce and the effect it has on our
environment, greatly contributing to the
spiraling , global extinction rate.
