A visual presentation of new research in environment, historical GIS, and digital media, this research profile highlights my recent post-doctoral work.
After collecting information and familiarizing themselves with the site, the Design Team began to analyze this information in a format that will document both opportunities and constraints to the park’s development. These opportunities and constraints begin to bring shape to the potential design program, and ensure that the ultimate physical plan recommendations are realistic and achievable.
Much of the information such as vegetative cover, drainage patterns, soil types, and landforms will be depicted on separate maps by sweeping patterns and color coded according to variety or condition. These individual maps of various characteristics of the site are then overlaid on top of each other. This is done so that the character of the site can be evaluated quickly, allowing the Design Team to easily identify areas for specific program items.
The City of Conway and The Walker Collaborative will kickstart the development of the Conway Historic Preservation Plan on Thursday, September 12 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Conway Police Department.

Planning and development director James Walden believes the impact of a citywide plan will be felt for years to come.
“Historic preservation is critical to ensuring future generations understand Conway's story and can see that history represented in the buildings throughout our community," explained Walden. "And while these efforts foster that connection to our history and community pride, there are also tangible economic benefits when our downtown and historic neighborhoods are vibrant.”

Genesee Valley Greenway State Park - HistoryJoan Schumaker
This show covers canal and railroad history of the historic transportation corridor that transitioned to the Genesee Valley Greenway and now the GVGSP, New York State's newest linear park.
As the initial step in the master plan process, the Design Team, conducted a thorough inventory of the site, its surroundings and those factors that might influence its development.
The purpose of the inventory phase was two-fold. First, it is essential to understand the physical, environmental, ecological, social, economic and development influences of the site in order to develop a concept for the park that will function efficiently and effectively at each stage of its development and use.
Equally important is the need to understand in detail the cultural characteristics, history and significance of the site. Discovering these distinctive qualities of place and celebrating them through imaginative design will result in a community park that is unique.
Walk the Doan Brook gorge from the Lower Lake downstream to Ambler Park. Here, the Portage Escarpment has several hard rock layers. We trace a glacial meltwater channel from the top of the Berea Sandstone through the Euclid bluestone. In numerous stops, see how early settlers used the rocks and waters for mills and quarries. Learn the natural base for suburban development. Comprehend the issues for stream conservation. Supported with a grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture, 2014.
Walk the Doan Brook gorge from MLK to Ambler Park. Here, we learn the natural base for Cleveland's early suburban development, 1890s-1910s. Comprehend the issues for stream conservation. Supported with a grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture, 2014.
