Surgical Skin Prep Audit
• Areas of concern:
– Product variation: 6 different preps observed
– Prep time/dry time: variable times not consistent
with manufacturer’s recommendations (e.g.,
Chloraprep prep time 7 seconds- 2 minutes; dry
times 7 seconds to 6 minutes)
– Aseptic technique: prep to periphery then back to
incision, prep to axilla then back to incision site;
13% used no gloves
Dual agents are more effective than single agent
for Surgical Site Infection (SSI) prevention.

Steps:
1) Click the lever
2) Allow solution to penetrate sponge
3) 30 seconds back and forth in every
direction strokes at surgical site
4) Saturated the rest of the prepping area
(abdomen)
5) Allow to air dry for 3 minutes
6) Drape
Warnings
Avoid getting solution in hairy areas. Wet hair
is flammable and may take up to an hour to
dry.
Don’t allow to pool. Tuck towels and use
sterile gauze or cotton tipped applicators to
absorb excess solution & remove after prep is
dry & before you drape.
Allow to dry 3 minutes before you drape or use
an ignition source such as cautery or laser.
Only use on clean dry , residue free, intact
skin!
If used in a “wet” site (underarms, groin, or
head you must “scrub” for at least 2 minutes
instead of 30 seconds as bacterial counts are
increased at these sites.
