abnormal condition that affect primarily infant
and children.
• BELOW ARE EXAMPLES OF CHILDHOOD
ILNESSES.
MALARIA
PNEUMONIA
3. MALARIA
Malaria is a life-threatening cause by parasites
that are transmitted to people through the
bites of infected female anopheles
mosquitoes. It is preventable and curable.
4. DEMOGRAPHIC HEALTH SURVEY DATA FOR MALARIA IN
BOMBALI DISTRICT FOR U5 CHILDREN (2018-2019)
Total number of cases suspected for malaria =
108,115 cases
Number of positive cases = 64,779
In 2019 number of cases suspected for malaria
= 105,411
Positive cases 62,190
7. The prevalence of malaria in 2018 is 64,779
positive cases of under five children with a
percentage of approximately 60%, in 2019 the
total number of positive malaria cases is
62,190 with a percentage of 59%.
In comparison between the two years (2018-
2019) there is a decrease in the number of
malaria positive cases.
8. Basic Indicators
VARIABLES 2018 2019
TOTAL POSITIVE
CASE

9. KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE AND BEHAVIOUR OF PEOPLE IN
RELATION TO MALARIA
multiple question use to asses knowledge related to
causes transmission signs and symptoms treatment
prevention and control of malaria. Majority of the
respondents correctly identify fever, headache, chills,
wetting and malaise to be the most common signs and
symptoms of malaria.
Of the total respondent majority had correct
understanding of mode of transmission of malaria while
others did not correctly identify that malaria is
transmitted by bits of mosquitoes.
10. PATTERNS AND EXTENT OF MALARIA
IN SIERRA LEONE
malaria is more prevalent in the rainy season
compared to dry season
ESTIMATED PREVALENCE OF MALARIA BY 2020
Through the intensive sensitisation and distribution
of insecticide treated net there will be a reduction
in the prevalence of malaria by 5% by the end of
2020.
11. PNEUMONIA
Pneumonia is an infection that inflame the air sacs in one or
both lungs
DEMOGRAPHIC HEALTH SURVEY DATA FOR PNEUMONIA IN
BOMBALI DISTRICT FOR U5 CHILDREN (2018-2019)
Total number of cases suspected for in 2018= 137876
Total positive cases =56163
Total number of suspected cases in 2019 = 137067

2019) there is a decrease in the number of
pneumonia positive cases.
16. KNOWLEDGE,ATTITUDE AND BEHAVIOUR OF
POEPLE TOWARDS PNEUMONIA
most parent believe that the indoor
temperature humidity and air movement has
effect on pneumonia, while others thought that
the etilogy of pneumonia was from getting cold.
Some parents had knowledge about pneumonia.
Most of them consulted with qualify doctors to
treat pneumonia. Some adopted by self
medication.
17. PATTERNS AND EXTENT OF PNEUMONIA
Pneumonia is more prevalent in the dry season
specifically from December to march
ESTIMATED PREVALENCE OF PNEUMONIA BY 2020
Improving awareness and trends in prevention of
pneumonia in the country, there will be a reduction in
the prevalence of pneumonia by 10% by end of
2020.
