Prateek Upadhyay, a class 12 student at R.N. Podar School, conducted a chemistry project to determine the calcium carbonate content of egg shells. The project involved crushing egg shells into a fine powder, treating them with hydrochloric acid, and using calculations to find that white egg shells contain approximately 76% calcium carbonate while brown egg shells contain around 68%. PRECAUTIONS AND SOURCES OF
ERROR
• All apparatus should be clean and washed properly.
 A large beaker ( 250 ml ) is recommendeddue to the large amount of
foaming .
 The shells shouldbe dry to get the best results .
 Peel off all the membranes from the inside of the shell .
 Precise weightsshouldbe measuredtoavoid propagationof error in
calculations .

16.  The egg shells should be preferably crushedintoafine powder using a
mortar and pestle for analysis .
 Proceedfurther only whenall the foaming subsides .
