Allen Fair, president of Crystal Systems near Lindale, TX, discusses the utility's implementation of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) for its 2050 account holders. Crystal Systems began researching AMI in 2008 but costs were too high, so it built an AMI reserve fund from 2010-2013. It deployed fixed infrastructure in fall 2013 and started installing smart meters in fall 2014, planning to complete installation by April 2016 using two employees. The AMI implementation has reduced meter reading costs, increased accuracy, shrunk the reading window, and enabled effective water conservation.

Telecollaboration environments provide language learners with rich opportunities for natural and authenticated communication. Web 2.0 tools from blogs to videoconferencing to 3D virtual worlds are used to form new social environments for collaborative creation, sharing and exchange. Real-life communication has thus expanded into virtual space with unprecedented possibilities for natural and incidental language learning outside and beyond the traditional classroom. In my talk, I will demonstrate and discuss the pedagogical potential of telecollaboration for monolingual and multilingual communication practice with reference to the European projects TILA and IVY/EVIVA. The TILA project ("Telecollaboration for Intercultural Language Acquisition") focuses on foreign language learning in secondary and tertiary education. The aim is to use the 3D virtual world environment OpenSim and the web 2 videoconferencing environment BigBlueButton to facilitate and foster intercultural communicative interaction and competence development in tandem and lingua franca constellations. In the IVY/EVIVA project ("Interpreter Training in Virtual Reality") virtual scenarios in SecondLife are used to provide interpreter students with opportunities for independent and authentic interpreting practice.

The nanoparticles were prepared using polyelectrolyte complexation of CS-SSPLA and dextran sulfate, and encapsulated doxorubicin with over 80% efficiency. Release studies showed the SSPLA reduced the initial burst release by up to 100% compared to CS nanoparticles alone. The CS-SSPLA nanoparticles provided a lag time of 1-3 hours before sustained release, indicating their potential for controlled drug delivery applications.

Nanomaterials are materials with at least one dimension between 1-100 nm that exhibit unique properties compared to larger materials. They have many applications including in drug delivery due to their high surface area and ability to reach difficult areas of the body smaller than cells. Nanoscale drug delivery systems include nanoparticles, liposomes, dendrimers, polymers, nanoshells, fullerenes, nanotubes, and quantum dots. Liposomes in particular are spherical vesicles consisting of an aqueous core surrounded by a lipid bilayer that can encapsulate both hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs and provide benefits like controlled release and altered pharmacokinetics. The development of nano-carriers is improving drug therapy by enhancing efficiency and selectivity while reducing side effects
