8. Biblical Definition: GREED
The Greek word pleonexia,
is the word that is most commonly
translated as greed or covetousness
in the New Testament.
9. John Ritenbaugh: “ruthless self-seeking,
and an arrogant assumption that others
and things exist for one’s own benefit.”
William Barclay: “accursed love of
having,” which “will pursue its own
interests with complete disregard for the
rights of others, and even for the
considerations of common humanity.”
14. 16 Then he told them a story: “A rich man
had a fertile farm that produced fine crops.
17 He said to himself, ‘What should I do? I
don’t have room for all my crops.’
18 Then he said, ‘I know! I’ll tear down my
barns and build bigger ones. Then I’ll
have room enough to store all my wheat
and other goods.
15. 19 And I’ll sit back and say to myself, “My friend, you
have enough stored away for years to come. Now
take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!”’
20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! You will die this
very night. Then who will get everything you worked
for?’
21 “Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly
wealth but not have a rich relationship with
God.”
16. HE WAS A GOOD CULTIVATOR
• He was wealthy and shows evidence of
shrewdness and industry.
• He was a prudent man and shows
thoughtful concerns on the coming
future.
17. HE WAS A BAD CALCULATOR
• Thinking there was no place for his
produce except in barns.
• Thinking comfort on hoarding his riches.
• He left out of his thought the One and
true provider of his wealth – God.
• Thinking that his Soul has no higher
needs than his body.
18. Greed will lead us to
completely ignore
our responsibility to God
in the matter of our possessions.
22. 10 Bring the whole tithe into the
storehouse, that there may be food in my
house. Test me in this,” says the Lord
Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open
the floodgates of heaven and pour out so
much blessing that there will not be room
enough to store it.
23. 9 Honor the LORD with your wealth and
with the best part of everything you
produce.
25. 35 In all things I have shown you that by
working hard in this way we must help the
weak and remember the words of the Lord
Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more
blessed to give than to receive.’”
26. 16 Do not neglect to do good and to share
what you have, for such sacrifices are
pleasing to God.
27. How can I defeat greed?
You can’t pray it away.
You can’t fast it away.
You have to give it away.
29. 15 Then he said, “Beware! Guard against every
kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much
you own.”
30. BEWARE OF GREED
• Greed breeds anxiety, envy and jealousy.
• Greed misleads and perverts judgment.
• Greed hardens the heart and destroys
the benevolent affections.
• Greed tends to end in crime.
• Greed ruins the soul.
31. 6 But godliness with contentment is
great gain.
7 For we brought nothing into the world,
and we can take nothing out of it.
32. 21 and said: "Naked I came from my
mother's womb, and naked I will depart.
The LORD gave and the LORD has taken
away; may the name of the LORD be
praised."
33. Our contentment should not be rooted
and anchored with our possessions.
True contentment comes with our
relationship with God and our
continuous sanctification of becoming
more like Jesus Christ.
34. 13 I can do all this through him who gives
me strength.
35. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I
know what it is to have plenty. I have
learned the secret of being content in any
and every situation, whether well fed or
hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.
13 I can do all this through him who
gives me strength.
36. A Christian has “the unsearchable
riches,” so nothing can impoverish
him; peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, so
nothing can fatally disturb him; “kept
by the power of God,” so nothing can
harm him; “strengthen by Jesus Christ”
so he can do all things.
We may, therefore, well be content.
39. The real portion of our wealth
is what will be ours in eternity.
