Greed is defined as an excessive desire to acquire or possess more than what one needs. It is a preoccupation with material possessions and wealth that ignores God. Greed destroys one's ability to trust in God as their source and provision. The document warns about the dangers of greed through the parable of a rich man who stored up wealth for himself but lost his life. It encourages giving to God through tithes and offerings as well as giving to those in need in order to chase away greed and store up treasures in heaven instead of on earth.
10. Then he told them a story: “A rich man had
a fertile farm that produced fine crops. He
said to himself, ‘What should I do? I don’t
have room for all my crops.’ Then he
said, ‘I know! I’ll tear down my barns and
build bigger ones. Then I’ll have room
enough to store all my wheat and other
goods.
11. And I’ll sit back and say to myself, “My
friend, you have enough stored away for
years to come. Now take it easy! Eat,
drink, and be merry!”’ “But God said to
him, ‘You fool! You will die this very night.
Then who will get everything you worked
for?’
18. 10 Bring one-tenth of your income into the
storehouse so that there may be food in
my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord
Almighty, “and see if I won’t throw open
the windows of heaven for you and flood
you with blessings.
24. But if someone who is supposed to be a
Christian has money enough to live well,
and sees a brother in need, and won’t help
him—how can God’s love be within him?
25. If God dealt with me the way I deal
with needy people, where would I be?
27. How can I defeat greed?
You can’t pray it away.
You can’t fast it away.
You have to give it away.
28. And God is able to make all grace (every favor
and earthly blessing) come to you in
abundance, so that you may always and under
all circumstances and whatever the need be
self-sufficient [possessing enough to require no
aid or support and furnished in abundance for
every good work and charitable donation].
29. and have an abundance for every good work
and act of charity. As it is written and forever
remains written, “H e [the benevolent and
generous person] scattered abroad , he gave to
the poor , H is righteousness endures forever !”
Now He who provides seed for the sower and
bread for food will provide and multiply your
seed for sowing [that is, your resources
30. and increase the harvest of your righteousness
[which shows itself in active goodness,
kindness, and love]. You will be enriched in
every way so that you may be generous, and
this [generosity, administered] through us is
producing thanksgiving to God [from those who
benefit].
37. Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs
to your earthly nature: sexual immorality,
impurity, lust, evil desires and GREED,
which is idolatry. Because of these, the
wrath of God is coming
38. Greed is a serious sin to be avoided;
wealth and power are serious
responsibilities to do good
39. Do not fear, little flock, for it is your
Father’s good pleasure to give you the
kingdom
40. The real portion of our wealth
is what will be ours in eternity.
