Investors put $33.1 billion to work funding startups in Q2 2018, a 16% increase from Q1 and 43% increase from Q2 2017. This was likely the highest funding level since the 2008 financial crisis. It was also a strong quarter for exits, with at least 27 US companies going public and $22 billion in disclosed acquisitions of startups. The report analyzed funding levels and trends across various stages from seed to late stage for US and Canadian companies.

Key Findings For Q2
Investors put $33.1 billion to work across all stages for
U.S. and Canadian startups over the course of the just-
ended quarter. That’s an increase of 16 percent from Q1
of 2018 and a whopping 43 percent increase from Q2 of
2017.
These appear to be the highest numbers since the 2008
financial crisis, according to Crunchbase records. It’s
likely that these are also the largest tallies since the dot-
com bubble, though our records do not go back far
enough to definitively validate this.

About “Projected” Data
Crunchbase uses projections for global and U.S. trend
analysis.
Crunchbase bases these projections on historical
patterns in late reporting, which are most pronounced
at the earliest stages of venture activity.
Using projected data helps prevent undercounting or
reporting skewed trends that only correct over time.
All projected values are noted accordingly.

the prevailing spot rate from the date funding rounds,
acquisitions, IPOs, and other financial events are reported.
Even if those events were added to Crunchbase long after
the event was announced, foreign currency transactions
are converted at the historic spot price.
