3. The city is lokated in Ukraine. The city has a shoking history.
On 26 April 1986 was an explosion at a nuclear power plant.
The scale of the explosion was so huge that people who
lived there had to be displaced. In response to the initial
accident a 30 km radius exclusion zone was created. After
many years people can visit this tragic place.

4. HowtogettoChernobyl?
From Dąbrowa Górnicza we take a bus to the bus station in Katowice ( St. Sądowa 5).
In Katowice we change to a bus going to Kiev. In Kiev we have the last bus change and
we reach Chernobyl.

5. Nuclear Power Plant
During a tour of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant you will see the reactor
where was an explosion, the unit’s control panel and control room where
the entire tragedy took place. Of course is compulsory to wear a fully
covered clothes whilst this area.
6. A Control room
Used to control the operation of all block
devices and to coordinate and supervise
their operation.
7. Radar Duga
Another thing worth seeing in Chernobyl are the military bases where people can
find a huge Radar Russian Woodpecker. Duga was a Soviet over the horizon radar,
system used as part of the Soviet missile defense early-warning radar network. The
system operated from July 1976 to December 1989 and people call it also „Moscow
Eye”. The antenna is 150 m high, this is very impresive.
9. Abandoned Hospital
The hospital consists of five
interconnected large blocks,
each with 6 floors. We find
abandobed equipment, hastily
abandoned tools, bedding and
medicine packing everywhere.
The hospital was supposed to be
a shelter for those who survived
the explosion. As a result, it
turned out to be the most
contaminated area.
10. What is most impresive is the children’s
ward of the hospital. Small, rust-covered
cost still line the walls, some of which
contain toys, bottles and even syringes. Tiny
mattresses are strewn acress the floor, and
the paint is peeling off the wall in patches.
The whole thing creates a perfect setting
for a horror movie, except that everything
really happened here.
11. The firefighter’s protective suits that they wore
during the operation were so highly irradiated
that it was decided to temporarily place them in a
place inaccessible to outsiders, which was the
hospital basement, where they all still there.
Despite the passage of nearly 30 years, the
hospital basements are still among the most
contaminated places in the zone.

12. School
The school was opened in 1978 and was
the largest school in the city, designed to
accommodate 1668 places. In addition
to typical school astifacts, you can also
find large amounts of gas masks in the
building.

14. Amusement park
All atractions in this park were launched only in
test mode- it was supposed to open on
International Worker’s Day- 1-st May 1986. But
carousels, boats, cars- all this remained a frozen
symbol of tragedy, because a few days before
the opening of the park, a reactor exploded and
this place was used to land military helicopters.

park in Chernobyl
17. Ferris wheel
It is a showcase of the Chernobyl zone.
The ferris wheel was supposed to
complete a full circle in 5 minutes, and
thanks to its height of 24 metres it had a
beautiful view of the city.
18. Swimming pool
Built in the mid-1970s. The swimming
pool building is divided into two parts:
a gymnasium and a swimming pool. In
its heyday, apart from its recreational
function, it served as a place for
organizing swimming competitions.
19. Plane flight
In addiction to visitting abandoned building
you can rent a plane flight over the
destroyed city.
20. samosioły
Also it is possible to talk to people who never did leave the
city during the displacement. We call them „Samosioły”
After the nuclear power plant disaster, nearly 200 000
people were forcibly evicted from there, including 96 towns
on the Ukrainian side alone. However a handful of people
decided to stay there. Today out of 3000 people, no more
than 40 survived, and every year this number decreases.
21. Jupiter Factory
The Factory opened in 1980 and
employed 3,500 people. Prior to the
accident, the Jupiter Factory was a
branch of the Kyiv manufacturer
„Mayak” and made electrical
components, mainly for use in tape
recorders.
22. Rumours abound of a military connection.
Following the diaster in 1986, the Factory
housed radiology laboratories used to test
decontamination techniques and dosimetry
equipment. The laboratories functioned up
until 1996 at which point the Factory was
abandoned for good.
