Charles Darwin was an English naturalist born in 1809 who is best known for his theory of evolution by natural selection, as published in his 1859 book On the Origin of Species. Darwin observed that individuals within a species vary in how well they are adapted to their environment, with better adapted individuals more likely to survive and reproduce, passing on beneficial traits over generations through a process known as natural selection.
