Charles Babbage was born in London on
the 26th
of December, 1791. He was the son
of a banker.
Background

Charles was often ill, therefore was
mainly educated at
home. He was very interested in
mathematics, and in 1810 he went to
Cambridge university.
Education

After Babbage had graduated, he was hired by the
Royal Institution to lecture on calculus. Before
two years had passed, he had been elected a member
of the Royal society.
Early Adult

With the help of his friends from Cambridge, he
set up the Astronomical society in 1810.He was the
first to challenge the dominance of the Royal
society.

From 1828 to 1839, Babbage was Lucasian
Professor of mathematics at Cambridge.
His Job

In the 1820s Babbage decided to work on
his ‘Difference Engine’. This was a
machine which could perform mathematical
calculations. It was a six wheeled model
that was constructed and demonstrated to
many audiences.

He then developed plans
For a better machine,

While he worked on his Difference
Machines, he was also inventing
another machine. It was a
revolutionary device, which gave him
the fame of being the pioneer of
computing!

Difference machine 2 was not finished
in Babbage’s lifetime, as he died at
home, in London on the 18th
of October
1871.
