This document discusses serverless computing using Java on AWS. It provides an overview of new developments in the Java ecosystem in 2017-2018, including Java 9-10 and frameworks like Spring. It defines serverless computing as a cloud model where resources are dynamically allocated and managed by the cloud provider. Some advantages are horizontal scalability and paying for only what is used, while disadvantages include increased complexity and difficulty debugging. Design principles for serverless apps emphasize statelessness, idempotency, retries, and throttling. Examples show using the AWS SDK for Java and the aws-serverless-java-container.

Microsoft Ignite 2019 - API management for microservices in a hybrid and mult...Tom Kerkhove
Microservices are on the cusp of becoming the dominant style of software architecture in the enterprise. The benefits that are realized—increased developer velocity, improved organizational agility, and reduced time-to-market of new services—are a powerful catalyst that is driving this transformation. As practitioners, how do we successfully fit microservices into the models and processes we already have in place?
Join Tom Kerkhove, an Azure Architect with many years of experience helping enterprises make this exact transition, for a hands-on experience demonstrating how he helps enterprises make the transition to API-first architectures and microservices in a hybrid, multi-cloud world.
IglooConf 2020 - API management for microservices in a hybrid and multi-cloud...Tom Kerkhove
This document summarizes the journey of Codito, a company that started with a monolithic application and migrated to a microservices architecture managed through API management. It describes how Codito initially used Azure API Management to expose a single API for their monolith. They then split the monolith into logical microservices APIs while maintaining the same public API surface. As traffic grew, they fully migrated internal services to microservices behind the API gateway. Finally, they implemented Azure Arc-enabled API Management to run APIs on-premises to meet a customer need. The document emphasizes that building platforms is an iterative journey and companies should start with a monolith and evolve incrementally to microservices as needs dictate.

Capacity Management Made Easy with Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling (CMP377) - AWS re:...Amazon Web Services
This document discusses Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling and how it can be used to automatically scale Amazon EC2 capacity up or down based on user-defined policies. Auto Scaling helps maintain application availability and allows scaling capacity out across availability zones. It allows grouping instances by criteria like instance type and launch template and supports automatic provisioning of instances using templates that specify configuration details. Auto Scaling also supports replacing unhealthy instances, lifecycle hooks to perform actions during instance launch/termination, and dynamic scaling based on metrics, schedules or predictive scaling.

SecOps 2021 Today: Using AWS Services to Deliver SecOps - SID304 - re:Invent ...Amazon Web Services
This talk dives deep on how to build end-to-end security capabilities using AWS. Our goal is orchestrating AWS Security services with other AWS building blocks to deliver enhanced security. We cover working with AWS CloudWatch Events as a queueing mechanism for processing security events, using Amazon DynamoDB to provide a stateful layer to provide tailored response to events and other ancillary functions, using DynamoDB as an attack signature engine, and the use of analytics to derive tailored signatures for detection with AWS Lambda. Log sources include available AWS sources and also more traditional logs, such as syslog. The talk aims to keep slides to a minimum and demo live as much as possible. The demos come together to demonstrate an end-to-end architecture for SecOps. You'll get a toolkit consisting of code and templates so you can hit the ground running.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
