2. Suffix -plegia
The suffix -plegia means paralysis.
Paralysis is the temporary or permanent loss of
function or voluntary movement.
Paralysis is caused by damage to the nervous,
usually the spinal cord, but can result from a
stroke, trauma, ALS, MS any many others.
It is has been studied that 1 in 50 people suffer
from some type of paralysis.

3. Suffix -plegia contd.
Monoplegia – Paralysis of one. This could be someone who
lost function in one leg or arm of their body.
Quadriplegia – Paralysis of four. This would be someone
who has lost function in both legs and arms and is
paralyzed from the head down.
Hemiplegia – Paralysis on one side of the body. Someone
may lose function of their right arm and leg, but maintain
function on the left side.
Paraplegia – Paralysis of the lower half of the body.
Someone who is paralyzed from the waist down normally,
but could also be slightly higher up than that.

4. Suffix - esthesia
The suffix – esthesia means feeling and
sensation
This could be not normal where the patient has
no or little feeling in their extremities.
It can also be above normal where the patient
has chronic pain and sensations such as
burning or tingling.

Anesthesia is the act of having sensation/feeling blocked
or temporarily taken away. Local, regional, general
and dissociative are the 4 types of anesthesia.
Hyperesthesia is excessive sensations. Your feeling and
sensation in an area is greatly increased.
Paresthesia is abnormal sensation. A patient could
suffer from having a burning sensation or tingling
sensation in a body part.
