This document discusses different types and patterns of innovation. It defines technology trajectory, product innovation, process innovation, radical innovation, incremental innovation, competence-enhancing and destroying innovation, component/modular innovation, architectural innovation, and discontinuous technology. Radical innovation introduces significantly new technologies, while incremental innovation makes minor changes. Competence-enhancing innovation builds on a firm's knowledge, but competence-destroying renders it obsolete. Component innovation changes parts without affecting the system, whereas architectural innovation alters how parts interact. Discontinuous technology fulfills needs with new knowledge.
