A chemical change produces new substances and is permanent and irreversible. Chemical changes, also called chemical reactions, occur when substances react to form one or more new substances. Factors that can determine whether a chemical change occurs include contact between reactants in different physical states, dissolving reactants in a solution, applying electricity, heat, light, or using a catalyst.
