This document discusses challenges of land conservation in dry areas of Central Asia and the Caucasus. It notes issues with soil salinity, degradation of pastures and forests, and projections of decreased precipitation in the region due to climate change. It describes the CGIAR Regional Program's work on germplasm enhancement, improving water management, rehabilitation of agricultural systems, conservation agriculture, and building local capacity. Key achievements include disseminating salt-tolerant varieties; using marginal water resources, saline soils, and degraded lands for biomass production; and promoting practices like raised-bed planting, laser land leveling, and residue retention.
