The CHA2DS2-VASc score was developed to improve on the CHADS2 score for assessing stroke risk in patients with atrial fibrillation. The CHA2DS2-VASc score assigns points for several additional risk factors compared to the CHADS2 score, including vascular disease, age 65-74, and female sex. A study of over 7,000 patients found the CHA2DS2-VASc score more accurately stratified patient stroke risk compared to the CHADS2 score, with adjusted stroke rates varying from 0% to 15.2% depending on the CHA2DS2-VASc score.
