Selective breeding in cows can pose several genetic risks for commercial beef producers. It may decrease genetic diversity over time by concentrating on only a few desirable traits, leaving the herd vulnerable if disease strikes. All cows could eventually share the same genes, and random mutations could be difficult to eliminate if they appeared. Selective breeding also risks animal welfare by potentially selecting traits that cause the cows physical discomfort. To manage these risks, producers should avoid breeding traits that harm cows and consider traits valued by consumers in addition to traits boosting beef production. Maintaining genetic diversity is important to protect the health and viability of the herd.

selective breeding and genetic engineeringBuhle Lukhele
Selective breeding and genetic engineering are techniques used to produce offspring with desirable traits. Selective breeding involves selecting animals with desired traits and breeding them, while genetic engineering transfers genes between organisms. Both techniques have benefits like increased crop yields or disease resistance, but also risks like loss of genetic diversity, animal health issues, or unintended effects. Genetic engineering in particular raises ethical concerns about manipulating natural organisms.
The document discusses the results of a study on the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns on air pollution. Researchers found that lockdowns led to significant short-term reductions in nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter pollution globally as economic activities slowed. However, the impacts on greenhouse gases and long-term air quality improvements remain uncertain without permanent behavior and economic changes.

Megan Crawcour completed a packaging design project in 2007 for her Diploma in Packaging Technology that focused on making an existing product more environmentally friendly. She redesigned the primary and secondary packaging to reduce the number of materials from seven to three, lightweighted materials, selected less energy intensive ones, and allowed for flat folding and space savings during transport. The redesigned packaging would also utilize less landfill space at end of life. Megan's project was nominated as a finalist for the regional Student Gold Pack Awards and she received a certificate and runner-up recognition at the ceremony.

Redesign a pack to an environmentally friendlier packMegan Rose
The document summarizes a student project to redesign an existing product's packaging to be more environmentally friendly. The redesign reduced the number of materials in the primary package from seven to three and made the materials lighter. It also selected less energy-intensive materials. Additionally, the new design allowed for flat folding of cartons to reduce transport costs compared to the existing non-nestable pack. The redesigned secondary package also included recycled corrugated liners. An adapted Walmart scorecard was used to evaluate how the new design made the packaging more environmentally friendly.

Introduction of Cybersecurity with OSS at Code Europe 2024Hiroshi SHIBATA
I develop the Ruby programming language, RubyGems, and Bundler, which are package managers for Ruby. Today, I will introduce how to enhance the security of your application using open-source software (OSS) examples from Ruby and RubyGems.
The first topic is CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures). I have published CVEs many times. But what exactly is a CVE? I'll provide a basic understanding of CVEs and explain how to detect and handle vulnerabilities in OSS.
Next, let's discuss package managers. Package managers play a critical role in the OSS ecosystem. I'll explain how to manage library dependencies in your application.
I'll share insights into how the Ruby and RubyGems core team works to keep our ecosystem safe. By the end of this talk, you'll have a better understanding of how to safeguard your code.

Chris Jones, Director of Product Management at BrainChip , presents the “Temporal Event Neural Networks: A More Efficient Alternative to the Transformer” tutorial at the May 2024 Embedded Vision Summit.
The expansion of AI services necessitates enhanced computational capabilities on edge devices. Temporal Event Neural Networks (TENNs), developed by BrainChip, represent a novel and highly efficient state-space network. TENNs demonstrate exceptional proficiency in handling multi-dimensional streaming data, facilitating advancements in object detection, action recognition, speech enhancement and language model/sequence generation. Through the utilization of polynomial-based continuous convolutions, TENNs streamline models, expedite training processes and significantly diminish memory requirements, achieving notable reductions of up to 50x in parameters and 5,000x in energy consumption compared to prevailing methodologies like transformers.
Integration with BrainChip’s Akida neuromorphic hardware IP further enhances TENNs’ capabilities, enabling the realization of highly capable, portable and passively cooled edge devices. This presentation delves into the technical innovations underlying TENNs, presents real-world benchmarks, and elucidates how this cutting-edge approach is positioned to revolutionize edge AI across diverse applications.

HCL Notes und Domino Lizenzkostenreduzierung in der Welt von DLAUpanagenda
Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/hcl-notes-und-domino-lizenzkostenreduzierung-in-der-welt-von-dlau/
