The Asian Apprenticeship Awards took place on the 10th November 2016 at the Holiday Inn Birmingham City Centre. The aim of the awards was to celebrate and showcase the best of British Asian Apprentices and the people that employ and train them. In doing this, we hope that we will encourage more young British Asians to consider apprenticeships and more employers to provide opportunities to benefit from the skills that apprentices bring. Apprenticeships provide value for individuals, businesses and the economy. There is a universal commitment in the UK of being able to extend opportunities for everyone regardless of their race, gender or religion. In this respect, a number of government targets have been placed to improve the labour market chances for all. These include increasing the quantity of apprenticeships taken on by young people deriving from BME backgrounds by 20% and also increasing BME employment by another 20%, by the year 2020. The Asian Apprenticeship Awards are all about doing something practical to make a positive difference. We believe at least in a small way that we have made a difference and will continue to do so by highlighting, recognising and celebrating apprenticeship success both with individuals, employers and learning providers that support them. We all recognise that for the success of businesses and therefore the economy and the country as a whole, we have to be able to draw upon a skilled and motivated workforce. It is also clear that our apprentices are vital to providing these skills. However, there are not enough of them and especially not enough from the British Asian communities. So the challenge for us is how to address this issue. Our aspiration is that the Asian Apprenticeship Awards will make an important contribution by raising awareness, celebrating success and inspiring others.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Mdm Quah Phaik Kim , a widow with a 9 year old daughter was told about Mount Miriam Hospital by friends and neighbours. After loosing her husband to liver cancer about more than a year ago, Mdm Quah’s world came to a stand still when she was also diagnosed with liver cancer in 2006. She was at the brink of giving up hope as she had spent her family’s life savings to treat her late husband. Through her friends’ advice, Mdm Quah came to Mount Miriam for a consultation. Mdm Quah was required to go through 20 times of radiotherapy treatment and 7 cycles of chemotherapy. As a single mum, her neighbour came to her assistance by caring for her daughter, while she went through her treatment. Mount Miriam helped to ease her medical expenses by offering 100% waiver on her treatment which amounts to more than RM10 thousand.
Miss Mangaikarasi a/p Muniandy is a 19 year old student from Langkawi who suffered pain in her legs initially. After many check ups, she was diagnosed with a tumour near her spinal cord. As Langkawi does not offer any treatment for cancer, her family sought for advice at Mount Miriam Hospital. Ms Mangaikarasi underwent 30 times radiotherapy and 3 cycles of chemotherapy. After a check on Ms Mangaikarasi’s background, Mount Miriam absorbed her medical expenses by 44 percent from a total of more than RM70 thousand. Appreciative of how Mount Miriam Hospital assisted the family, Ms Mangaikarasi’s brother, who works for Kamdar Langkawi, assisted to arrange for a donation of 100 pieces of bed sheets and 100 pieces of pillow cases by Kamdar Langkawi.
There are various funds set up by the hospital; they are: Needy Patients Fund Was set up with the main aim to provide medical subsidy to deserving and needy patients. Yearly disbursement amounts to RM700 thousand to RM800 thousand. Palliative Care Centre Fund Was set up to subsidize the cost of palliative in-patient and palliative home care provided. Yearly more than RM500 thousand subsidy was disbursed. Education & Research Fund To constantly upgrade medical knowledge of our medical team and to support hospital research and development on cancer treatments. General Fund To to subsidize or aid in the development and maintenance of hospital. IGRT Fund (Image Guided Radiotherapy treatment machine) To aid in purchase of a new radiotherapy treatment machine. This treatment machine cost us RM 7.8 million. Till to date, we have managed to raise slightly more than RM2 million.
Types of patients Yearly, MMCH treat more than 1,000 new cancer patients. Top right pix – Patient at Day Chemo Bottom left pix – Preparation for Radiation
