CERN was founded in 1954 and now has 20 member states. It has around 2300 staff and a yearly budget of around 1000 MCHF. Data from experiments flows to permanent storage at rates of 4-6 GB/sec. The Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) distributes computing and storage resources across 130 Tier-2 centers and 11 Tier-1 centers to support data processing and analysis for the LHC experiments. In 2011, 23 PB of data was written to tape. The LHC experiments generate over 1 billion CPU cores of computing usage per month distributed across the WLCG. CERN is working with other scientific organizations and IT companies to address its growing data processing needs at the ex
