πάνω από 100 εκατ σπόροι από όλο τον κόσμο.

του βουνού της Αρκτικής, συσκευασμένοι σε αλουμίνιο,
που περιβάλλονται από τείχος πλάτους ενός μέτρου.
Ο θόλος (Αποθήκες) βρίσκεται στο βάθος ενός τούνελ 125
m, λαξευμένος στο βράχο. Ακόμη και αν αποτύχουν όλα τα
συστήματα ψύξης, λένε οι επιστήμονες, η θερμοκρασία στα βουνά
ποτέ δεν υπερβαίνει τη θερμοκρασία του παγώματος λόγω του
μόνιμου παγωμένου υπεδάφους της περιοχής.

14. Η είσοδος της στοάς έχει μια
φουτουριστική σχεδίαση με
μεταλλικούς καθρέφτες που
αντανακλούν τον ήλιο κατά τη
διάρκεια της ημέρας και λάμψη
στο σκοτάδι της νύχτας, και
σχεδιάστηκε από τη νορβηίδα
καλλιτέχνη Sanne Dyveke. Δίπλα
στην πόρτα είναι οι συμπιεστές
των οποίων η λειτουργία είναι να
ψυχθεί το εσωτερικό της
δεξαμενής.

16. Μπαίνοντας στο θόλο, το πρώτο πράγμα που θα δείτε είναι έναν (125 m)
μακρύ διάδρομο (στοά), που οδηγεί στο καταφύγιο σε τρεις αποθήκες.

18. Το εσωτερικό της εισόδου
(στοάς) είναι ενισχυμένο με μια
κυκλική δομή χάλυβα
σχεδιασμένο για να
αποφευχθεί ο κίνδυνος της
κατάρρευσης της στοάς λόγω
της διάβρωσης του βουνού στο
οποίο χτίστηκαν οι αποθήκες.
19. Στο τέλος της εισόδου (στοάς), είναι η αίθουσα ελέγχου όπου τεχνικοί
καταγράφουν στους υπολογιστές κάθε δείγμα σπόρων που έρχεται
στο καταφύγιο από όλες τις χώρες.
20. Οι τεχνικοί πρέπει να ταξινομούν κάθε δείγμα, προσδιορίζοντας το
είδος, την προέλευση και την ηλικία. Όλες οι πληροφορίες
αποτυπώνονται σε μια ιστοσελίδα της οποίας το περιεχόμενο διατίθεται
ελεύθερα στην επιστημονική κοινότητα.
21. Τα δείγματα σπόρων εισάγονται σε συσκευασίες με τρεις στρώσεις
αλουμινίου, που έχουν κλείσει ερμητικά για τη διατήρησή τους υπό τις
καλύτερες δυνατές συνθήκες.
22. Μόλις έχουν καταγραφεί
και ερμητικά
σφραγισμένα τα
δείγματα σπόρων
εισάγονται σε πλαστικά
κιβώτια και να
τοποθετηθούν σε μία από
τις τρεις αποθήκες.
23. Τα δείγματα διατηρούνται σε "μαύρα κουτιά" και θα κυκλοφορήσουν
μόνο στην περίπτωση, που όλες οι πηγές σπόρου έχουν καταστραφεί ή
εξαντληθεί.
24. Όσον αφορά τα μέτρα ασφαλείας, το σύστημα είναι εξοπλισμένο με
θωρακισμένη πόρτα και μια περιφραγμένη περίμετρο, και που
παρακολουθείται από τις νορβηγικές αρχές.
25. Οι υπεύθυνοι αναφέρουν, επίσης την απομακρυσμένη τοποθεσία της
εγκατάστασης, τους απίστευτα κρύους χειμώνες, τους όγκους του
πάγου και ακόμα και τις πολικές αρκούδες που είναι επιθετικές προς
τον άνθρωπο, σαν πρόσθετα μέτρα ασφαλείας.
26. Προς το παρόν, υπάρχουν περισσότερες από 1000 τράπεζες σπόρων
παγκοσμίως. Ωστόσο, πολλοί από αυτούς, ιδίως στις αναπτυσσόμενες
χώρες, συνεχώς απειλούνται από τη λειψυδρία, τον κίνδυνο των
σεισμών, πλημμυρών ή άλλων φυσικών καταστροφών, τις επιπτώσεις
του πολέμου ή απλώς της κακής διαχείρισης,
λόγω περιορισμένων πόρων.

28. Για την αντιμετώπιση όλων αυτών των κινδύνων, στις οποίες πρέπει να
προστεθεί και η αυξανόμενη απειλή της κλιματικής αλλαγής ή η
παγκόσμια καταστροφή που θα μπορούσε να προκαλέσει έναν
πυρηνικό πόλεμο, η Νορβηγία έχει κατασκευάσει το ‘doomsday vault’
(Αποθήκη). "Ο στόχος μας εδώ είναι να κρατηθεί ένα αντίγραφο
ασφαλείας των σπόρων από όλο τον κόσμο», εξηγεί ο Westengen. Έτσι,
λόγω οποιαδήποτε καταστροφής, φυσικής ή ανθρώπινης, η
βιοποικιλότητα των καλλιεργειών θα είναι ασφαλής. Η Αποθήκη είναι
μια κρίσιμη στρατηγική για να εξασφαλίσει το μέλλον των καλλιεργειών
που τροφοδοτούν όλους μας."

30. Η διατήρηση των σπόρων στο θησαυροφυλάκιο (Αποθήκη) είναι μια
δωρεάν υπηρεσία, και όλες οι χώρες στέλνουν τα δείγματά τους και που
θα παραμείνει πάντα οι ιδιοκτήτες τους. Μπορούν να χρησιμοποιούν
ανταλλακτικά δείγματα που θα διατηρούνται στην -Arctic- αποθήκη
κάθε φορά που μία από τις ποικιλίες εξαφανίζεται από το φυσικό τους
περιβάλλον.
