Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to invite you to serve on the Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Blacks for the 2015-2016
academic year. Clara Awe and Tarri Strickland have agreed to serve as co-chairs. Additionally, Clara Awe will
represent this committee on the Diversity Advisory Committee (DAC).
The Chancellor’s Status Committees function as advisory bodies to the Chancellor, comprising staff, students, and
faculty who collaboratively monitor the needs of underrepresented groups on campus, and proactively make policy
recommendations that can improve the diversity climate on campus. As members of the Chancellor’s Status
Committees you are partners in helping the campus meet its diversity goals.
Our diversity strategic plan, A Mosaic for UIC Transformation, reminds us that our efforts toward achieving
greater equity and inclusion must be “a collective undertaking” and “not the work of a few, but the duty of all.”
In that spirit, I encourage you to expand participation by reaching out to students, staff, and faculty beyond this
committee and engaging them in subcommittee activities.
Administrative oversight of Status Committees is assigned to the Office of Diversity. Kristy Kambanis in the
Office of Diversity will provide support for the administrative and organizational functions of the Status
Committees. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Kambanis at kristyk@uic.edu, or at 312-996-8915.
Your contribution to the campus through this committee is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Michael D. Amiridis
Chancellor
