3. ☆Introduction
*History
▪For over 2,000 years , native tribes in the Amazon rainforest have
used (aka Una de Gato) in Spanish traditionally and spiritually.
which is known today as cat's claw
* discovery of plant
in 1789 by Johann von Schreberi( er ist ein deutscher botaniker) has
described this plant and named is uncaria tomentosa in his Genera
Plantarum(plants) edition.
Uncaria is derived from the Latin word uncus, meaning "a hook". It
refers to the hooks, formed from reduced branches
Tomentosa ,, from latin tonentum ( stuffing for)
4. *why is it important?
▪Cat’s Claw first came to the attention of the European scientific
community in the 1970s
▪ Austrian researcher Klaus Keplinger learned about Cat’s Claw from
the Ashaninka people of central Peru. The native people value this
plant as highly spiritual and important to folkways
▪Keplinger received two U.S. patents for isolating of oxindoles
5. ☆ Scientific name
▪Uncaria tomentosa (Rubiacea)
is a woody vine knwon as cat' claw
because of hook-like thorns that
resemble the claws of a cat.
6. ☆source
▪Biological source : two species of cat's claw are commonly used;
Uncaria tomentosa
Uncaria guianensis
Other plants do not belong to Rubiaceae
▪The two are frequently confused but U. tomentosa is the more
commonly used in traditional medicine
▪Geographical source:
the two species of cat's claw is found in
tropical jungles of America and Europe.
Other plants is found in Mexico , they are
known as “uña de gato” in Spanish.
8. ▪The powdered inner bark of the stems of Uncaria
tomentosa , according to definition of USP
9. ▪The root bark , According to Hagers Handbuch
"handbook"(deutschland wort)
10. ☆Constituents
There are three classes of compounds that are thought to
play an important role in the activity of cat’s claw;
commentsconstituent
Pteropodine
isopteropodine
speciophylline uncarine F
mitraphylline isomitraphylline
pentacyclicsOxindole alkaloids
0.15-4.60%
Alkaloids
Rhynchopphylline
isorhynchophylline
tetracyclics
present in cat’s claw and many other plants such as coffee, tobacco and carrotsQuinovic acid
glycosides
Terpenes, Triterpenes, TerpenoidsTerpens
12. ☆uses
1.whole plant Extracts
•anti-inflammation
•scavenging of free radicals
•inhibition of the activation of the inflammation promoting
factors
•reduction of chemically induced apoptosis
•Anti-mutagenic effects
Note : Method of preparation may affect potency. greater evidence
of anti-inflammatory activity with the alcoholic extract than watar
extract (5.71% vs 0.26%) of oxindole.
2.Isolated constituents ( three classes)
13. A.OXINDOLES
*The purified extract is limited to pentacyclic alkaloids is marketed in Austria under
the brand name of Krallendorn or "claw thorn
*stimulate the immune system ↑↑phagocytosis
by granulocytes
*increased proliferation of normal resting or
weakly activated human lymphocytes.
*reduction of nerve fiber reception and
transmission of pain (nociception).
*tetracyclic effects include
•sedative effects within CNS
•inhibition of platelet aggregation & thrombosis
within CVS
14. B.QUINOVIC ACID GLYCOSIDE
* strong antioxidant
* used as starting materials to prepare
《robust antifungal activities.》
* anti-viral activity
* antiproliferative activity
* prolonged lymphocyte survival
* improved DNA repair
* inhibition of cell growth without cell death
* reduced skin cell death upon UV Exposure
15. C.TERPENS: are biologically active compounds found in cat’s claw and
in the essential oils of many other plants and flowers
* defense
* attractant for insect of pollination.
☆ toxic &side effects
* Renal failure has been reported in a patient with lupus
erythematosus
* hypotension in high tetracyclic proportion in extract
* headache, dizziness and vomiting in Latin American
Species
* No toxicity was observed (a study in 2013)
16. ☆ contraindication
•it should not be used by anyone who is pregnant or nursing a baby.
Because of unknown effects upon immature immune systems
•Potential interactions may occur with hormones, insulin, vaccines.
•Because of anti-platelet effects, this herb should not use with
aspirin or other medicines that increase the risk of bleeding
