Cathay Girls – Introduction\n(Ask Audience) When you hear the word stewardess or flight attendant, what comes to mind? \n(Audience Response)\n
Would any of you think of them as objects of desire, envy and sexual fantasy? That is the stereotype that has been placed upon Cathay girls. What is a Cathay girl exactly? Well, they’re flight attendants, but more specifically, they’re special breed of flight attendants. They are the women who serve the customers of Cathay Pacific Airways. \n
Based in Hong Kong - China, Cathay Pacific Airways was founded in 1946 by an American and Australian pilot. They are known to have the most infamous flight attendants in all the skies. Being created by two “Western men,” Cathay Pacific knew what their customers liked and hired women that would attract and please their customers. \n
. This created the “Cathay Ten.” -The ten nationalities of women recruited to work for Cathay. – Recruits were women from places such as Malaysia, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Philippines, India and China. However, only educated bilingual women who spoke fluent English and another language of a country in which Cathay Pacific flies were illegible. This created a fleet of women that many Western men would “fly” for. \n
Unlike flight attendants of American and European Airlines, Cathay girls are far more hospitable; giving them everything and anything they were “comfortable” with. As one customer put it, “a non-stop flight to the land of exoticism, pampered with 18 hours of foreplay by these beautiful stewardesses.” The airlines encouraged this representation of their stewardesses. Why wouldn’t they, it brought good business. The thought of having an obedient, submissive, exotic, sexy woman cater to your every need, what man wouldn’t want that? But, with every stereotype comes the truth. Yes, these girls loved their job. Who wouldn’t want to be envied for their “glamorous existence,” an opportunity to gain financial stability and a chance to travel the world? And although this career gave these girls a new sense of independence and freedom, it also brought them a high amount of attention, a type of attention that they were not used to, sexual attention. Some girls, -the “party-girls”- indulged in this new feeling of being wanted and fantasized. While others shunned away from the stereotype of being a “flying prostitute.” Whether the girls decided to stay-in after a long day of work, or go out to party with a new guy she just met on her last flight, all Cathay girls were placed in the same category of being “easy.”\n
