This document provides instructions to disassemble and assemble the final drive of a D9R track-type tractor. The disassembly process involves using various tools to remove over 30 components from the planetary carrier, sun gear, hub, and ring gear. The assembly process reverses the disassembly steps, heating some bearings before installation and using special tools to install seals and retainers. Proper handling and installation of components is important to avoid damage.

2. Start By:
a. Remove the final drive. See Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive - Remove".
When you are using hydraulic cylinders and puller studs, always ensure
that the rated capacity of the puller stud meets or exceeds the rated
capacity of the hydraulic cylinder. If the puller stud does not meet or
exceed the rated capacity of the hydraulic cylinder, a sudden failure of
the puller stud could occur. The sudden failure of the puller stud could
result in personal injury or death.
NOTICE
Do not use threaded rods that have not been hardened as tooling with
hydraulic cylinders. The maximum rated tonnage should be stamped
on one end of the puller studs. Do not use threaded rods that have not
been stamped with the rated tonnage.

the bearing cone will need to be heated with a torch.

33. If necessary, remove bearing cone (33) from the hub. Securely support the hub. Heat the
circumference of the cone evenly. Do not stop the torch and heat the cone in any one place.
If the hub is heated excessively during bearing removal 150 °C (300 °F), the future service
life may be reduced. If the bearing cone is heated in any one place to a temperature above
120 °C (248 °F), the heat treatment will be destroyed. A bearing failure is probable if the
bearing is used again.

hub (24). Check with a 0.038 mm (0.0015 inch) feeler gauge. Ensure that the bearing cup is
seated against the bottom of the bore all the way around.

18. 7. Turn over hub (24). Install Tooling (F) in the hub and fasten a suitable lifting device to the
Tooling. Put hub (24) in position on hub (28), as shown.

hub while the bolts that hold the retainer are tightened to a torque of 135 ± 15 N·m
(100 ± 11 lb ft). Permit the bearing cone to return to room temperature before the retainer
and Tooling (F) are removed.

22. 17. Use feeler gauge (36) to measure the distance between retainer (20) and pins (22). The
clearance must be 0.08 ± 0.05 mm (0.003 ± 0.002 inch).
Note: There must be metal to metal contact between hub (28) and retainer (20). If there is
no gap, bearing cone (27) was not pressed correctly with Tooling (H). See step 9. A gap
between pins (22) and retainer (20) allows metal to metal contact between retainer (20) and
hub (28).

24. 23. Install plates (13) and bolts (12). Tighten the bolts to a torque of 50 ± 10 N·m (37 ± 7 lb ft).
Note: There must be metal to metal contact between shafts (14) and plates (13). Use a feeler
gauge to ensure that there is a gap of 0.08 ± 0.05 mm (0.003 ± 0.002 inch) between plates
(13) and the surface of the carrier.
24. Use a suitable press to push the plates even with the surface of the carrier after plates (13)
have been installed.

30. Install bearing cones (6) in gears (7).

31. Put gears (7) in position in planetary carrier (2).
32. Lower the temperature of shafts (5). Install the shafts in planetary carrier (2) and the gears.
If necessary, use a press to install the shafts. Install the shafts until the small end of the shaft
extends 0.08 ± 0.05 mm (0.003 ± 0.002 inch) past the surface of the planetary carrier.
Ensure that there is a metal to metal contact between shafts (5) and the plates.

33. Put O-ring seals (37) in position in plates (4).
34. Install plates (4) and bolts (3). Tighten the bolts to a torque of 134 ± 20 N·m (99 ± 15 lb ft).
Note: There must be metal to metal contact between shafts (5) and plates (4). Use a feeler
gauge to ensure that there is a gap of 0.08 ± 0.05 mm (0.003 ± 0.002 inch) between plates
(4) and the surface of the carrier.
35. After plates (4) have been installed, use a suitable press to push the plates even with the
surface of the carrier.

37. Make an alignment of the drain hole in the planetary carrier with the drain hole in the hub.
38. Install bolts (1). Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 430 ± 60 N·m (320 ± 45 lb ft).

1. Inspect O-ring seal (2) that is for the final drive. The O-ring seal is not shown. Check for
wear or damage. If necessary, make a replacement. Install O-ring seal (2). Attach Tooling
(A) to the brake housing. Position the brake housing onto the final drive. The weight of the
brake housing is approximately 250 kg (550 lb). Remove Tooling (A) and replace the bolts.
2. Install three bolts (1) that hold the final drive to the brake housing. Torque bolts (1) to
105 ± 20 N·m (77 ± 15 lb ft).
End By:
a. Install the final drive and brake. See Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive - Install".

33. 1. Fasten an appropriate lifting device and install Tooling (A) on the final drive and brake (6).
Adjust bolts (3) until the bolts are against the final drive hub. If necessary, adjust Tooling
(A) to put the final drive in a level position. The weight of the final drive and the brake is
approximately 1270 kg (2800 lb).
2. Put final drive (6) and the O-ring seal in position on the machine.

3. Install three bolts (5). The bolts hold the brake to the frame.

4. Install bolts (2) that hold the final drive in place. Tighten the bolts to a torque of
1150 ± 150 N·m (850 ± 110 lb ft).
5. Remove Tooling (A).
6. Install three bolts (3).
7. Apply Tooling (B) to the bolts that held tooling (A) in place. Tighten the nuts to a torque of
650 ± 70 N·m (480 ± 50 lb ft). Tighten the nuts an additional 120 degrees.
End By:
a. Install the outer axle. See Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle - Install".
b. Connect the track. See Disassembly and Assembly, "Track - Connect".
