1. Pull the front idler and recoil spring assembly (1) partially out of the undercarriage frame.
Attach a suitable lifting device to the front idler. Pull the front idler and recoil spring
assembly out of the undercarriage frame until the recoil spring is exposed.
2. Reposition the lifting device to the front idler and the recoil spring assembly. Remove the
front idler and recoil spring assembly (1) from the undercarriage frame. The weight of the
unit is approximately 81 kg (179 lb).

3. Position the front idler and recoil spring assembly horizontally. Block the unit in position in
order to keep the unit from falling. Attach a suitable lifting device to recoil spring (2).
Remove four bolts (3) and separate recoil spring (2) from front idler (4). The weight of the

54 kg (120 lb).

1. Prior to assembly, ensure that the mating surfaces of the front idler bearings and of the
recoil spring assembly are clean and free of dirt and debris.

b. Position the recoil spring assembly so that nut (8) is centered in the hole of reaction

d. Operate Tooling (B) enough to hold the recoil spring assembly in position between
reaction plate (2) and movable plate (3).
e. Be sure that the recoil spring assembly is leveled and centered in Tooling (A).

assembly until the retaining rod and the nut are free to move.

15. a. Operate Tooling (B) and slowly compress the recoil spring assembly. Use the access
hole in reaction plate (2) and guide the end of the retaining rod into position in
support (10).
b. Open the covers on Tooling (A). Determine Dimension (X) by measuring the length
of recoil spring (11) and support (12). Dimension (X) must be 361 ± 1 mm
(14.21 ± 0.04 inch).
c. If the compressed length of the recoil spring is not correct, close covers (9) on
Tooling (A). Use Tooling (B) to adjust Dimension (X) to the correct length.
d. If the compressed length of the recoil spring is correct, assembly of the recoil spring
assembly can be completed.
e. Install the washer and nut (8). Be sure that all the threads in nut (8) are engaged with
threads on the retaining rod.
7. Operate Tooling (B) and release the pressure on the recoil spring assembly. Open the covers
on Tooling (A).

2. Remove the track roller that is located under the hydraulic track adjuster. Refer to
