Carrick was born with acute myeloid leukemia and spent the first six months of his life in the hospital, battling cancer. His parents Crista and Patrick lived at the hospital with him and grew close with his nurses. After months of chemotherapy, surgery, and infections, Carrick's doctor said he could go home for Christmas. Though his leukemia is now in remission, Carrick will continue monthly checkups until age 5 due to residual effects from treatment.
