This document describes a case study of installing 48 E1 ports on a single Elastix system. The challenges were supporting the high density of concurrent calls and limitations of Asterisk/Elastix. The solutions involved using OpenVox D430 cards with adjustable interrupt routing and firmware upgrades. Testing involved Winsip calls across the NET and CPE spans, resulting in stable operation with 70-580% CPU loads and good voice quality, representing the largest such installation done with Elastix. The future may involve higher port density E1 products and hot-plug gateway capabilities from OpenVox and further development of Elastix.
