In my visit to my parents' house in California, I sit in their kitchen reading an article titled
"Philippine President Duterte Says Filipinos in America are Not Filipinos". Angered at the thought
and why the Filipino president would even say that, I stopped and thought "ok, that's partly right". It
still came out harsh. My DNA is Filipino and I can't realistically erase my Filipino blood just cause I
was born in America. I am in fact one of many first generation American born from Filipino
immigrants. My experience being Filipino in America has uniquely shaped my understanding of
myself as a member of this group with how I relate to others, recognizing my lack of understanding
of Filipino traditions and cultures and learning more about my roots. In seeing how I fit into history,
I've traced generational influences back to the push/pull factors of Filipino migration, identify time
periods that were significant and the changing ethnic identity. Poverty, hardships and lack of
employment opportunities are what had pushed Filipinos to migrate to America. The longer they
remained was the likelihood of things staying the same or worse. This was one of the reasons my
father, who arrived here at the age of 30 in 1975, decided migrate to the states. "I wouldn't have a
good living there", my father replied then continued to talk about wage comparisons, how much
food cost and even how cheap good beer and cigarettes were. Like my father, people in the
Philippines were getting impatient. There was strong fight and desire for change, but "corruption,
incompetence, mudslinging and other signs of an unstable management of a country"(Pinoy OFW)
had pushed residence to leave the country for a more "economically stable" future. A better
alternative for Filipinos was to quickly take advantage of the opportunities for the bountiful jobs in
America as working conditions in the Philippines involved "contractualization, age discrimination,

While being in California I was able to attend Michelle their 18–year–old daughters, "coming of age
celebration". This is the formal presentation for young women in the culture to be presented to
society. This particular coming of age celebration was a formal affair with a strict dress code of a
suit and tie for the men, dresses for the women and a ball gown for Michelle, with the color theme

I have always been interested in my heritage, thus I do my best to indulge myself in the culture of

Prompt: What three things did you learn about yourself how did this new knowledge of yourself
change or affect you and how will this affect your life or actions or opinions going forward.
Paragraph 1: Background
Before I choose a topic about Filipino culture I orginally desired to learn about life at an inner city
school by observing it with my own eyes or the policies of catholic high schools on homosexual
students. However, time and material forced my hand so I interviewed my best friend on his moms
native culture of the Philippines. This interview was conducted last week on the first floor of the
steely library. So my orginal thoughts of the Philippines I'll be honest weren't much. It was a nation
that I didn't know had achived indpendacy from the united states over 50 years ago. I honestly
thought we still held it as a territory. Until this interview I never thought about the Philippines up
until this interview so forming any context of the island or culture was rather diffcult outside of its
basic geography. Prior to this interview I associsated this island nation with nothing. From a cultural
standpoint I knew nothing of what it held a belived it to be a largely indpendent nation in culture
similar to the way of the rest of the pacific islands. When I thought of the Philippines I could not
help but picturing a simply rainer version of african with people of different decent. The picture was

In a profession such as nursing, being aware of diverse cultural practices can help individuals
provide the best care possible. According to Larry Purnell, there are twelve domains pertaining to
culture that can define how unconsciously or consciously we are either competent or incompetent.
These domains include heritage, communication, family roles, workforce, bicultural ecology, high–
risk behaviors, nutrition, pregnancy and childbearing, death rituals, spirituality, health care practice,
and health care practitioners. To expand my knowledge on these domains pertaining to Filipino
culture, I interviewed Joseph A. His mother emigrated to the United States over 25 years ago from
the Philippines, and has ensured that their family stays true to many Filipino traditions, including
speaking their native language of Tagalog at home.
Family Roles and Organization
In Filipino culture, family is the most important thing to them and everything is centered on family.
In his household, his mother does the cooking, cleaning, and sets the rules for the children. Joseph
and his brother do all the heavy lifting, errands, and driving in the family. Overall, children are
expected to do all that is asked of them, and work hard in school to ultimately attend college.
Children and adolescents are typically put on a pedestal and are spoiled with love and affection,
because they are the new generation. Correspondingly, children are viewed more as equal status and

Philippine Cultural Awareness Culture is the shared patterns of behaviors and interactions, cognitive
constructs, and affective understanding that is learned through a process of socialization. These
shared patterns, identify the members of a culture group while also distinguishing those of another
group. Five major characteristics of a Philippine culture include family, beliefs, customs, food, and
language. In this essay geography and military conflict history, weather analysis, and civil

With past conflicts with the Spanish and Asian countries, it is apparent that the Filipinos have picked
up a number of their tendencies along with their culture. The weather of the Philippines has had a
substantial effect on population, agriculture, smuggling, and insurgency. With an average of
seventy–four degrees Fahrenheit year round; mean summer the highs stay around one–hundred
degrees with the winters only dropping forty–eight degrees Fahrenheit. The Philippines had a
population growth rate of 1.51% in 2017, which is one of the highest in the Asian countries. The
weather has also helped with agriculture. With its main agricultural crops, rice, corn, coconut,
sugarcane, bananas, pineapple, coffee, mangoes, tobacco, and abaca (which is a banana–like plant),
the Philippines thrives with agriculture. Smuggling has always been a huge problem. In 2012,

reached $19.6 billion. Insurgencies in the Philippines go as far back as the Spanish rule in the
1800's. Ongoing insurgencies date back to the 1940's with farmers and landlords, government power
