CEVA Logistics: IBM Sterling B2B IntegrationLightwell
For consumers, retail events such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday are exciting opportunities to pick up a bargain—but for the logistics companies working behind the scenes, these massive spikes in demand can be a tough challenge.
To keep the supply chain moving smoothly, logistics companies rely on electronic data interchange (EDI) messages—containing information on purchase orders, invoices, acknowledgements and more— owing between hundreds of clients, suppliers and logistics partners. In the run-up to major retail events, the volume of EDI messages sent to logistics companies can skyrocket, and any processing delays increases the risk of lost revenues and damaged reputations. How can logistics businesses gain high-performance, dependable and scalable EDI services without breaking the bank?

1. Customer Success Story
BUSY optimizes Business Operations at BBF
BBF made a modest start in the packaging industry and grew to acquire the
reputation of a high‐end packaging major. With strengthened business
ethics, the company diversified into plastic moulding in 1997 and
contractual manufacturing of FMCG products in 2000. The company's
plastic products are sold in domestic and major international markets under
brands “JOY HOME” and “ELANCE”. BBF is into contractual manufacturing
tie up with various FMCG giants like Reckitt Benckiser, Jyothy Laboratories, S
C Johnson, Godrej Sara Lee and Bombay Chemicals. The focus has always
been on delivering high quality products. A green channel supplier to most
of its clients, BBF Industries, with its high business standards and ethics, is
today a name to be reckoned with in packaging, plastics, FMCG products as
well as paper and paperboard.
Key Challenges
The packaging industry is competitive and one can't afford to manage business processes manually due to
the level of accuracy required to complete them. BBF industries deployed an ERP solution in their
premises for managing their business processes. The target was to manage the entire production,
accounting and inventory setup. The solution was able to cater their requirements but right from its
implementation stage was proving expensive. Trained manpower was required to manage the deployed
solution. Moreover, definition of user access rights and calculation of state specific taxes were not an
in‐built part of the solution and required customization. This involved considerable cost, time and effort.
All these issues along with high operational costs prompted the company to shift to a more suitable
business management application.
Company's in‐house IT team studied all the business processes meticulously to identify the problem it was
facing in the existing system and zeroed down to the following requirements:
• Handling of complete Production process right from sourcing & purchasing of raw material, gate entry
pass, quality check and production to final sale.
• Generation of complete accounting and Inventory Reports.
• Handling of data across multiple branches.
• Multi state VAT reports.
• Exhaustive User control was desired. The Company wanted an effective Access Rights & authorization
process.
• Less Manpower and operational cost as compared to its existing software solution.
• Simple to use software solution which people from non technical background could also
operate.
2. Solution
BUSY was introduced to BBF by Mr. Anil Yadav of Excellent softwares-an exclusive solution partner of
BUSY. After seeing the demo, Mr. Anurag, Group CIO, BBF, was convinced that BUSY will be able to
manage their back-end operations. A separate custom application was developed to cater specific
requirements related to company's production process.
The solutions provided were:
Production Management:
A custom bridge application was developed by Excellent Softwares & later integrated with the financial
engine of BUSY to generate corresponding reports at required time. The application was synced with
BUSY at three critical points in their production cycle‐ Purchase, Production & Sales
All Sale / Purchase of raw material was managed in BUSY. During production of goods, stock status reports
were generated based on the input fed by the application which helped in knowing the stock status of both
raw material and finished goods. At the time of Sale, the items sold were automatically subtracted from
the finished goods. At any point in time, detailed reports corresponding to any process in production
could be generated in BUSY.
Financial Accounting :
BUSY provided state‐wise VAT reports corresponding to all states in India. Hence BBF was able to generate
VAT reports without the need for customization. Moreover, the costing of all raw materials along with their
sale / purchase transactions were managed in BUSY. The company could see the reports anytime as per
convenience and heads required.
Multi-branch Management with User Access Rights Mechanism:
Online HO / BO module of BUSY solved the problem of handling data at multiple branches. With this
module, all branch offices were able to directly enter data at the Head Office Server. User‐wise Access
Rights and Controls, both at branch and Head Office level helped company to easily define Access Rights
and authorities of different users at different branches.
Although the complete data was integrated and online, branches were restricted to data pertaining only
to them where as at the Head‐office, reports pertaining to any specific branch or for all branches
combined could be generated effortlessly.
3. No trained manpower required
User friendly interface and simple‐to‐use design of BUSY makes it very easy to operate. Apart from basic
training, no special expertise was required to use BUSY.
Today, the company is able to manage its business operations with BUSY and the custom application at a
much reduced manpower and maintenance costs. “BBF Group is delighted with our decision to use BUSY
as our business support system. We applied a very rigorous and thorough methodology to the selection
process which forced us to think carefully about what were our main objectives while replacing our SAP
system and what functionality was most important to us in a new system. We finally zeroed down to
BUSY – the business accounting system.” added Mr. Saxena.
“The structured approach of BUSY was invaluable for identifying and formulating our key
requirements. The BUSY team and their partner – Excellent Softwares - demonstrated a
strong sense of partnership, professionalism and hands-on experience throughout the whole
process. I consider this complex project to be one of the most successful we have completed
at BBF after SAP in flat 90 days with heavy customization and user friendly integration with
the Busy engine.”
Anurag Saxena, Group CIO, BBF Industries
