Nick Leeson was a rogue trader at Barings Bank who single-handedly caused the collapse of the centuries-old bank. As the sole trader in Barings' Singapore office, Leeson took increasingly large and risky bets on stock index options. Through fraudulent accounting practices where he hid his losses, Barings was unaware of the true size of Leeson's positions. When Japan's stock market crashed in 1995, Leeson's bets soured and his losses totaled over $1.4 billion, bankrupting Barings.
