CAS PRESENTATION
CAS is a fundamental requirement of the Diploma Program and takes seriously the importance of life
outside the world of scholarship, providing a refreshing counterbalance to academic studies. It is a
requirement for those pursuing an IB Diploma. CAS involves students in experiential learning through a
range of artistic, physical and service experiences.
CREATIVITY: Music, art, theater, student publications/performances and other experiences that promote
creative thinking such as planning experiences or problem solving.
ACTIVITY: Activity experiences promote sportsmanship, cooperation, teamwork, and physical fitness
contributing to a healthy lifestyle.
SERVICE: Service is an unpaid and voluntary exchange that has learning benefits for the student. The
rights, dignity, and autonomy of all those involved are respected.
WHAT IS CAS?
Criteria-Must include purposeful experiences; personal challenge; planning, reviewing and reporting.
Experiences-Description must include details, goals & supervisor information. Estimate hours
according to Creativity, Action, Service. Ex: 10 hrs working with the PTSA. Noted as 2 hrs of Creativity
& 8 hrs of Service that equals the total amount of activity hours.
Learning Outcomes-Activities must address individual or a combination of the required 7 outcomes; 8
outcomes for the class of 2016. Reflections should include clear evidence that the outcomes have
been achieved.
Project-Your project should include the CAS cycle: Investigation, Preparation, Action, Reflection and
Demonstration of Results. Remember to select the Project box on ManageBac.
Reflections-Reflections allow you to explore the thoughts and feelings that you experienced before,
during, and after each activity. Minimum of 1 reflection per activity (Pre & Post are suggested) Students
often make the mistake of producing a narrative that includes descriptions of the activity, who was
there, where it took place, etc. s
Supervisor Reviews-Request review after each experience is completed. Go to ManageBac for an
online request (preferred) or provide a hard copy to supervisor.
