According to a 2008 census, Alguazas had a population of 8,855 people with a density of 289.04 residents per square kilometer. The population grew steadily throughout the 20th century until declining between 1960-1970 due to emigration of young people seeking jobs. Currently the birth rate is 12.19%, slightly above average. Since 1993 the area has experienced negative migration. The immigrant population has increased dramatically in recent years from places like Cuba, Bolivia, Ecuador, Ukraine, Romania, and Morocco. For example, 15% of students are immigrants. The Roma population is also at risk of social exclusion due to high school absence rates and lack of family involvement in education.
