Carlos Noriega is a Peruvian astronaut born in 1959 in Lima, Peru. He was selected by NASA in 1994 and participated in two space missions - Atlantis in 1997 and Endeavour in 2000. During his first mission, he brought some Peruvian souvenirs including purple corn, the Peruvian flag, and a gold Tumi in honor of the Chimu culture. Noriega married an American woman named Wendy Thatcher and they have five children together. In 2009, the mayor of Callao City invited Noriega to the opening of a new space-themed park in Lima to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing.
