Dental caries is a preventable, chronic disease caused by biofilm on teeth modulated by diet. It can be classified according to clinical management strategy as initial/white spot/non-cavitated lesions or cavitated lesions. Caries can also be classified as active, inactive/arrested, or rampant based on rate of activity, and as enamel caries, dentin caries based on depth of lesion, or as primary, secondary, or residual caries based on occurrence. Caries can also be classified by location such as pit and fissure, smooth surface, or root caries.
