Capstone Reflection 2
I have learned a great deal along my educational journey at Alvernia University. Alvernia
has taught me vary many great lessons using their own core values of service, humility,
peacemaking, collegiality, and contemplation. My core beliefs have grown since my first year
attending this university. Alvernia requires all graduates to complete 40 hours of community
service upon graduating from school. This is because of Alvernia’s strong belief in service and
the helping of others. My value of service has been influenced by having to complete these hours
and where I completed them. My first set of hours were completed by helping clean up a local
Reading playground by pulling weeds, wiping down, and picking up any trash. My other hours
consisted of helping take care of one of the sisters at St. Joseph’s Villa. I also took notes for
various classes assisting students who had trouble in those said classes. My service value was
influenced by showing me how much good I can do for one person and how it is a domino effect
for everyone else around them. Cleaning up the playground helped me create awareness of the
local problems we face and encouraged me to do more work locally and complete more service.
Helping a sister at the Villa helped me appreciate my health and the individuals who helped
make this university great. This also helped influence my humility.
My humility has been influenced at Alvernia by teaching me to focus solely on helping
others and how being happy for other people can in turn make me have a positive outlook on life.
By making sure other people are helped and by being humble in your own accomplishments, it
strives me to create more goals and follow them. My peacemaking skills were influenced by the
interactions I have had among campus with the sisters, guests, teachers, and fellow students.
When everyone is in peace with each other, the environment is a calm and inspiring one. When
everyone around learns to try and understand each other and bring up others, it helps oneself
achieve inner peace. My peacemaking has been greatly impacted by the teachers who create a

learning environment for me where I wish to learn as much as I can. My teachers have been
flexible, understanding, brilliant, kind and encouraging. I only want to achieve more and more of
my goals. This goes in hand with my collegiality.
My collegiality and contemplation have been heavily impacted by my learning
experiences at Alvernia. I have created a vision and purpose for myself based on all of my
experiences here. My collegiality has grown into a vision I wish to hold onto for the rest of my
life. I want to be able to help people locally and give back to the community that gave to me
when I needed it most. It has shaped me as the person I am today. My contemplation has become
more endearing and more used in my everyday life thanks to Alvernia. I always had the idea that
everyone needs to respect one another and that everyone should be treated kind and equal.
Alvernia helped inspire me to do this every day by constantly showing me examples around
campus of how others should be treated. Even on one of my teacher’s off days, they still did
everything they needed to for us to have the best learning experience possible. Now when I go
through each day of mine, I try to do it by being the best self I possibly can. I have reached most
of what the university expects from their graduates.
I have indeed gained ethical self awareness, a reflection of my own achievements, and
have learned to meaningfully use my experience for good by making connections with them to
my everyday life. I have achieved these outcomes to a high milestone level. I have not reached
the greatest level of ethical self awareness because I still do not practice my core beliefs as often
as I would like to. I have reached a great amount of reflection on all of the lessons I have learned
here. I have learned a lot inside the classroom but mostly while I was out on fieldwork and
interacting with other people. My perspective on life has changed due to seeing the way the
sisters of the Villa live their lives every day through humility and grace. My goal is to wake up

every day with the goal of making everyone’s day I come into contact with a better one. I have
made meaningful connections among my experiences but I still do not complete tasks as great as
I would like to. I have many issues with being able to complete tasks on time. I am learning to do
things in a timely manner and in the best way possible. I wish to one day use the connections and
experiences I have had to better my future.
An ethical issue I care strongly about are women’s health issues. In today’s society many
actions have been taken to decrease quality in women’s health that I just do not support. Planned
Parenthood has been widely discussed about and being defunded. Some do not believe the
quality and affordability of women’s health to be important. Women experience more health
issues than me and they can prove to be quite difficult. We are often being told what to do with
our own bodies. By applying different ethics and multiple perspectives to this issue, we are able
to spread awareness of it. By using the issue of ethical principles in women’s health, it shows
how unethical it is to tell someone how to control their body. By seeing perspectives of women
in different situations that the public wishes to defund, one can see how important it is that
Planned Parenthood stays in action and continues to get the funding it needs. This will help
women everywhere who have to deal with situations such as abortion and pregnancy first hand.
