CONDITION ASSESSMENT
PROGRAM (CAP)
LIBIN VARGHESE
UT BATCH
WHAT IS CAP (Condition assessment
Program) ?.
Condition Assessment Program(CAP) is a specialized survey program
which offers owners a detailed assessment of a ship's actual condition.
CAP is a voluntary service
CAP is therecognized method for a ship owner to
demonstrate thequalityand suitability of a vessel
for charter.
CAP PURPOSE
 To have the vessel judged based on the actual condition on board
rather than age
 To contribute to protecting life, property and the environment and to
ensure safest possible transportation of the cargo
 To document a vessel's technical condition towards/in connection
with:
- Charterers
- Refinancing of the vessel
- Sale or termination of management agreements etc.
WHEN IS A CAP RATING REQUIRED?
Most charterers require a CAP rating on all vessels aged
15 years and above.
CAP RATING
A CAP rating is assigned to the vessel.
-CAP 1 (Very Good)
-CAP 2 (Good)
-CAP 3 (Satisfactory)
-CAP 3 (Poor)
CAP 1 and CAP 2 rating is required by most charterers.
Both of these ratings suggest that thevessel
has been maintained to a standard in excess of
Classification minimums.
RATED ITEMS
 Ballast tanks.
 Cargo tanks and void spaces.
 External structure (main deck, ship sides and bottom).
 Structural strength.
The rating of each main structural element is based on the following input:
-Visual inspection to establish extent of local corrosion and defects, and to give a visual
impression of the overall condition.
-Analysis of thickness measurements (UTM) to establish extent of general corrosion.
-Extent and condition of coating for segregated ballast tanks.
BALLAST TANKS
 UTM
 Visual condition
 Coating
BALLAST TANKS
Visual condition
Each tank/space is rated.
• Visual
– Edge corrosion, incl. openings
– Grooving
– Pitting
– Indents
-Any other local defect (e.g. Crack,
buckling)
RATE -1 Very good condition
RATE -2 good condition
RATE -3 fair condition

CONCLUSION
CAP is therecognized method fora ship owner to
demonstrate thequality and suitability of a vessel
forcharter.
Cargo owners and many of the largest charterers
either require or prefer a CAP 1 or CAP 2 rating for all
older vessels fixed to carry their cargo.
