After a turbulent youth, he became interested in Manichaeism and Neoplatonism while searching for answers about evil. He had a long-term relationship that produced a son but eventually separated from his lover after converting to Catholicism. In 386 AD, while deeply distressed over his inability to live a celibate life, Augustine heard a voice telling him to "take up and read" from St. Paul's letters, which led to his conversion to Christianity. He went on to become Bishop of Hippo and wrote extensively, including Confessions and City of God, establishing himself as a seminal
