Cancer starts with the abnormal growth of one cell that can multiply into billions of cancerous cells. Some cancer cells produce chemicals that allow new blood vessels to form, enabling cancerous cells to break off and travel to other parts of the body. Smoking puts people at risk of lung cancer and other cancers. Tobacco smoke, including cigarettes, cigars, and pipes, causes about 90% of lung cancer cases. The risk increases based on how much and how long someone has smoked. Exposure to secondhand smoke also increases lung cancer risk. Changing one's diet and exercising can help reduce cancer risks, as obesity increases cancer risks. Not smoking and avoiding secondhand smoke are important ways to lower lung cancer risks.
3. HOW DOES CANCER START? HOW DOES IT
SPREAD?
Cancer starts with the abnormal growth of one cell.
Once the abnormal growth happens the cells can multiply in billions
of cancerous cells.
Some cancer cells produce a chemical which in turn enhances
angiogenesis. Angiogenesis allows the body to form new blood
vessels allowing for the cancerous cells to break away from a
malignant(cancerous) tumor and travel to other parts of the body.
