The Canary Islands are an autonomous community and outermost region of Spain located off the northwest coast of Africa. The archipelago includes seven main islands - Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro. Legally, the Canary Islands are recognized as a nationality of Spain, though geographically they are part of the African continent. The capital is shared between Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the largest cities on Gran Canaria and Tenerife islands respectively. Tenerife is the most populous island, with over 865,000 inhabitants.
