The environment in which today’s organizations find themselves continues to be
more globalized as the world is becoming a “global village.” This globalization
is driven in part by continued growth in multinational investment to include more
and more companies entering into alliances with foreign companies, exporting
their products overseas, and building plants in other countries. All of the human
resource management (HRM) challenges, issues and opportunities discussed in
previous chapters in this book are interrelated conceptually and operationally in
the international context.
This chapter discusses a number of the HRM challenges, issues and opportuni-
ties HRM professionals and their organizations will need to address in today’s and
tomorrow’s global world of work. The chapter first takes a look at today’s global
organization and some HRM issues. Next, the discussion turns to the globaliza-
tion of business and factors affecting HRM in global markets before focusing
on an analysis of levels of global or international and HRM operations. Finally,
the chapter discusses globalization and implications and impacts on HRM in the

For the past decades, there have been profound changes in the international busi-
ness scene. With geographic national borders being almost replaced by multi-
national firms, and a heightened level of labor mobility around the globe, the
implication of HRM to design and develop firms’ global business strategy, and
to direct individuals (i.e. managers and professional staff alike) for working in
different countries, is undoubtedly significant. Rosalie Tung (2016) has recently
suggested that in the past three decades or so, globalization/regionalization, mi-
gration and reverse migration (also referred to as “brain circulation”), the ascen-
dancy of emerging markets, the demand for people with a global mindset, and
the worldwide war for talent have brough.

Maker Mindset Facilitates Innovation at MIT
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has had a long history of innovation. Much too often, in fact, students would convert their dorms and apartments into laboratories of innovation and invention called "makerspaces". These workspaces for innovation are central to the institution’s legacy of research and development. Makerspaces are examples of MIT’s motto, “mens et manus” (mind and hand) at work. MIT is synonymous with innovation, and this rapidly growing ecosystem is another evolution of the university’s platform for research.."
MIT's makerspaces are often categorized into three types: machine shops, project makerspaces, and community makerspaces. In the machine shop makerspaces, machinists oversee students developing complex systems. Students can seek project makerspaces to help them with class projects. In community makerspaces, students are not limited in the types of research they engage in while learning about safe maker practices.
New Grant Funds Study of Worm to Understand Serotonin and Behavior
An educator, academic, and successful entrepreneur, Jean-Jacques Degroof has extensive experience in teaching about and building new ventures.
A few years ago, Jean-Jacques Degroof launched with MIT's International Science and Technology Initiative (MISTI) an edition of Global Startup Labs at the University of Louvain in Belgium.
MIT has always been at the helm of innovation, producing some of the country’s best and brightest talent, and this year, the school was granted funding for research to study behavior on a nematode. The study’s researchers chose C. elegans because the system from which they emit and receive serotonin is comparable to that of mammals.
Because of the complexities of the nervous system in mammals, researchers could not use mammals, but they instead chose this worm because the nematode's neurons can be precisely mapped out. Scientists can genetically control these cells including the five systems that regulate serotonin.
Being able to regulate all of the neurons in the worm’s nervous system allows them to study the release of serotonin and how this affects behavior. The first two experiments will focus on how the brain uses serotonin to control behavior, and the third experiment planned will focus on how this behavior changes in complex environments.

While it has benefited sectors like security and energy efficiency through infrastructure like cable cars, it has not significantly impacted politics or the economy. However, these areas have still improved compared to the 1990s. Medellin can use globalization to reduce unemployment and increase economic value, such as through developing transportation infrastructure in poorer areas to connect them to jobs. This has led to commercial changes and new business opportunities in these areas. While Medellin and Colombia face challenges with internationalization, globalization remains a tool for development when implemented moderately and inclusively.

The environment in which today’s organizations find themselves continues to be
more globalized as the world is becoming a “global village.” This globalization
is driven in part by continued growth in multinational investment to include more
and more companies entering into alliances with foreign companies, exporting
their products overseas, and building plants in other countries. All of the human
resource management (HRM) challenges, issues and opportunities discussed in
previous chapters in this book are interrelated conceptually and operationally in
the international context.
This chapter discusses a number of the HRM challenges, issues and opportuni-
ties HRM professionals and their organizations will need to address in today’s and
tomorrow’s global world of work. The chapter first takes a look at today’s global
organization and some HRM issues. Next, the discussion turns to the globaliza-
tion of business and factors affecting HRM in global markets before focusing
on an analysis of levels of global or international and HRM operations. Finally,
the chapter discusses globalization and implications and impacts on HRM in the

For the past decades, there have been profound changes in the international busi-
ness scene. With geographic national borders being almost replaced by multi-
national firms, and a heightened level of labor mobility around the globe, the
implication of HRM to design and develop firms’ global business strategy, and
to direct individuals (i.e. managers and professional staff alike) for working in

suggested that in the past three decades or so, globalization/regionalization, mi-

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has had a long history of innovation. Much too often, in fact, students would convert their dorms and apartments into laboratories of innovation and invention called "makerspaces". New Grant Funds Study of Worm to Understand Serotonin and Behavior
An educator, academic, and successful entrepreneur, Jean-Jacques Degroof has extensive experience in teaching about and building new ventures.
A few years ago, Jean-Jacques Degroof launched with MIT's International Science and Technology Initiative (MISTI) an edition of Global Startup Labs at the University of Louvain in Belgium.
MIT has always been at the helm of innovation, producing some of the country’s best and brightest talent, and this year, the school was granted funding for research to study behavior on a nematode. The study’s researchers chose C. elegans because the system from which they emit and receive serotonin is comparable to that of mammals.
Because of the complexities of the nervous system in mammals, researchers could not use mammals, but they instead chose this worm because the nematode's neurons can be precisely mapped out. Scientists can genetically control these cells including the five systems that regulate serotonin.
Being able to regulate all of the neurons in the worm’s nervous system allows them to study the release of serotonin and how this affects behavior. The first two experiments will focus on how the brain uses serotonin to control behavior, and the third experiment planned will focus on how this behavior changes in complex environments.
Architect Converting Shipping Containers to Emergency Hospital Pods
Jean-Jacques Degroof is an accomplished entrepreneur and venture investor with experience teaching at leading European business schools. An alumnus of MIT Sloan School of Management, Jean-Jacques Degroof supports entrepreneurship and innovation at his alma mater.
One of the innovative projects is being undertaken at MIT is by Carlo Ratti, a professor of architecture. Mr. Ratti is developing two-bed intensive care pods out of ordinary 20-foot long shipping containers to increase hospital bed capacity in cities around the world ravaged by the COVID-19 pandemic. The pods can be built for about $100,000, equipped with all relevant medical devices, a fraction of the cost of building an emergency prefabricated hospital.
Mr. Ratti is working with a team of professionals from around the world to fast track the innovative solution. He has already received funding from UniCredit to build the prototype which will be deployed in Milan, Italy where the pandemic is straining health care systems. He will make the designs public so that teams around the world can use them to ramp up their healthcare capabilities. He is also in talks with automotive manufacturers to mass-produce the pods.
MIT Tests Innovative COVID-19 Treatment

Recently, an MIT chemistry team led by associate professor Brad Pentelute began testing a drug candidate that held promise as a treatment for COVID-19. The drug, a peptide or short protein fragment, mimics proteins found on the surface of human cells. Initial research of the drug has shown it can disarm coronaviruses by binding to a viral protein that the virus uses to enter cells.

MIT Sloan's Innovative Artificial Intelligence-Based Tactile Glove
MIT Sloan researchers have developed a scalable tactile glove (STAG) with approximately 550 sensors that allows AI systems to receive tactile feedback. STAG achieved up to 76% accuracy in identifying common objects like a mug or tennis ball without visual information and could correctly guess their weight within 60 grams. The researchers believe integrating STAG with computer vision could enable robots to replicate human interactions like doing chores or washing dishes, and it may also help with customizing prosthetics.
MIT Researchers Use Visual Stimulation to Treat Alzheimer’s Disease
MIT researchers used flickering LED lights at a specific frequency to stimulate the visual cortex of mice with Alzheimer's disease. This visual stimulation significantly reduced the buildup of beta amyloid plaques in the mice's brains. While the results were promising in mice, the director of MIT's Picower Institute cautioned that treatments effective in mice do not always translate well to humans. However, the noninvasive nature of visual stimulation makes it a desirable treatment approach.
Mit researchers discover functional link between apoe4 and alzheimer's
MIT researchers discovered that the APOE4 gene variant linked to Alzheimer's disease dysregulates cholesterol metabolism in astrocytes and impairs microglia's ability to remove amyloid proteins and foreign matter in the brain. The study is the first to reveal the functional connection of how APOE4 increases the likelihood of developing Alzheimer's, as previous research only showed a statistical correlation. The researchers were able to reverse the negative effects of APOE4 by using gene editing to convert it to the APOE3 variant in brain cells.

- 2. Educator and mentor Jean-Jacques Degroof is a former Sloan Fellow of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Sloan School of Management. Today Jean-Jacques Degroof supports MIT initiatives that promote entrepreneurship and innovation, including the annual Solve summit.
- 3. An annual event bringing together teams to tackle some of the biggest challenges in the world today, Solve offers winning teams $650,000 in funding and prizes. On May 18, 2018, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was the main speaker at the annual Solve meeting.
- 4. Speaking at MIT’s Kresge Auditorium, Trudeau emphasized the need for people to embrace change and influence it as it takes place. He stated that as the world becomes technological, global, and diverse, new challenges will be created. Rather than fear change, people must come together to shape the change.
- 5. Trudeau praised MIT’s Solve for its efforts in reimagining the conversation around change. He compared it to a challenge program in Canada that sought to involve more women in entrepreneurship. He said that by challenging more people, solutions will be created and, even better, society will become inclusive and more engaged.
