Blog – What is next for the Global GDP – August 2023 The global economy is showing signs of improvement but remains fragile. Global GDP growth in 2023 is projected at 2.6%, the lowest annual rate since the global financial crisis, with the exception of the 2020 pandemic period. A modest improvement to 2.9% is foreseen for 2024. There has been some respite: lower energy prices are helping to bring down headline inflation, and the earlier-than-expected reopening of China has provided a boost to global activity. However, the impact of higher interest rates is increasingly being felt across the economy. High inflation and slow wage growth pushed real wages down in 2022, but these are projected to stop declining in most OECD countries over the course of 2023. The economy grew at an annualized rate of 3.1 per cent in the first quarter, helped by business investment and household spending, Statistics Canada said Tuesday.
The result was down from an annualized rate of 6.6 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2021.
Statistics Canada said the change came as export volumes dropped 2.4 per cent for the quarter, following two consecutive quarterly increases.
Meanwhile, the agency said household spending rose 0.8 per cent in the first quarter, to mark a third consecutive quarterly increase.
Spending on durable goods gained 2.6 per cent in the first quarter, helped by a 16.1 per cent increase in spending on new passenger cars and a 3.5 per cent gain for new trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles.

Summary:
Canadian economic momentum decelerated in the second quarter after an unexpectedly strong start to the year.
Preliminary data suggest gross domestic product decreased 0.2% in June, the first contraction this year, led lower by the wholesale and manufacturing sectors, Statistics Canada reported Friday in Ottawa.
That followed a 0.3% expansion in May, matching the median estimate in a Bloomberg survey of economists. Canadian bond yields ticked higher; the loonie initially rose, then gave back those gains.
Overall, the monthly gains — including April’s 0.1% boost — point to annualized growth of 1% in the second quarter. Although it will likely be revised, that’s slower than the 1.5% pace projected by the Bank of Canada earlier this month, and much weaker than the 3.1% growth in the first three months of 2023.
“We’re starting to see some evidence that almost 500 basis of points of tightening, compressed in a very short window of time, is starting to have an impact on the economy more broadly,” Robert Kavcic, a senior economist at Bank of Montreal, said on BNN Bloomberg Television. “We’re seeing it in areas like housing, we’re seeing it areas like consumer spending, where spending volumes at the retail level have really flattened out.”

OTTAWA — The Canadian economy grew by 0.1 per cent in February, Statistics Canada said Friday.
In its latest report on economic growth, the federal agency's preliminary estimate suggested real gross domestic product grew at an annualized rate of 2.5 per cent in the first quarter.
The February figure came in lower than was expected by Statistics Canada as wholesale and retail trade as well as manufacturing all contracted.
Boosting real GDP in February was growth in the public sector, professional, scientific and technical services, construction and finance and insurance.
Statistics Canada revised up its January figure for real GDP to 0.6 per cent.
The Canadian economy is expected to stall this year and potentially enter a recession as high interest rates weigh on consumers and businesses.
The Bank of Canada is holding its key interest rate steady at 4.5 per cent, the highest it's been since 2007.
The federal agency's preliminary estimate for March suggests the economy contracted by 0.1 per cent.
"After sprinting out of the gate to start 2023, the Canadian economy had already hit a wall by March," CIBC economist Andrew Granthan wrote in a client note.
The expected dip in real GDP is driven by continued declines in wholesale and retail trade, in addition to mining and quarrying.
But Grantham said the new data shouldn't change much for the Bank of Canada's outlook.
"Until there are clearer signs that slowing growth is also helping to ease core inflation, the Bank of Canada will continue to lean towards raising interest rates, even if a hike is not ultimately needed, with rate cuts not coming until 2024," Grantham said.

BOC and other reserve banks need to think extremely hard about rising of interest rates. The threat of global recession grows each day. BOC would be better off to pause interest rates and look at other areas of policies as part of managing monetary government. The federal government should be focus on drastic policy changes including pausing all new tax hikes including hikes to CPP, EI, and carbon tax. The focus should be on addressing issues with port capacity, promoting more innovation, productivity improvements, skills gap, housing supply, and streamlining of taxation and regulations as it relates to the goods-producing sector.

Last month Deputy Governor Gravelle described the bank’s 1% overnight rate as “too stimulative” and the same could be said of today’s 1.5%. Indeed, the policy statement noted that with the economy in excess demand and inflation well above target and still yet to peak, “interest rates will need to rise further.” It finished by saying the bank is “prepared to act more forcefully if needed”—that’s not new language for the BoC but it’s new to the policy statement.

What is next for Natural Gas - July 2023.pptx
Last week, natural gas prices rallied about 6.9% in what was the best 5-day period since the middle of June. Yet, despite this performance, you can barely notice a change in meaningful trend on the daily chart below. The heating commodity remains broadly range-bound ever since prices stabilized around November.
While natural gas eventually broke above the falling trendline from August, meaningful upside progress has been lacking. Broadly speaking, the heating commodity remains stuck in a broad range between 1.967 and 3.027. Until a breakout is seen in either direction, the technical outlook remains mostly neutral.

Real gross domestic product (GDP) was essentially unchanged in March, following a 0.1% increase in February. Service-producing industries (+0.0%) were flat, whereas goods-producing industries (-0.1%) edged down. Overall, 12 of 20 industrial sectors posted increases in March.
Public sector continues upward momentum
The public sector (educational services, health care and social assistance, and public administration combined) continued its upward momentum, increasing 0.3% in March and rising continuously since February 2022.

OTTAWA — The Canadian economy grew by 0.1 per cent in February, Statistics Canada said Friday.
In its latest report on economic growth, the federal agency's preliminary estimate suggested real gross domestic product grew at an annualized rate of 2.5 per cent in the first quarter.
The February figure came in lower than was expected by Statistics Canada as wholesale and retail trade as well as manufacturing all contracted.
Boosting real GDP in February was growth in the public sector, professional, scientific and technical services, construction and finance and insurance.
Statistics Canada revised up its January figure for real GDP to 0.6 per cent.
The Canadian economy is expected to stall this year and potentially enter a recession as high interest rates weigh on consumers and businesses.
The Bank of Canada is holding its key interest rate steady at 4.5 per cent, the highest it's been since 2007.
The federal agency's preliminary estimate for March suggests the economy contracted by 0.1 per cent.
"After sprinting out of the gate to start 2023, the Canadian economy had already hit a wall by March," CIBC economist Andrew Granthan wrote in a client note.
The expected dip in real GDP is driven by continued declines in wholesale and retail trade, in addition to mining and quarrying.
But Grantham said the new data shouldn't change much for the Bank of Canada's outlook.
"Until there are clearer signs that slowing growth is also helping to ease core inflation, the Bank of Canada will continue to lean towards raising interest rates, even if a hike is not ultimately needed, with rate cuts not coming until 2024," Grantham said.

The focus should be on addressing issues with port capacity, promoting more innovation, productivity improvements, skills gap, housing supply, and streamlining of taxation and regulations as it relates to the goods-producing sector.

Last month Deputy Governor Gravelle described the bank’s 1% overnight rate as “too stimulative” and the same could be said of today’s 1.5%. Indeed, the policy statement noted that with the economy in excess demand and inflation well above target and still yet to peak, “interest rates will need to rise further.” It finished by saying the bank is “prepared to act more forcefully if needed”—that’s not new language for the BoC but it’s new to the policy statement.

Homebuilders are walking a fine line when it comes to new projects as high mortgage rates curb demand.
New residential construction, including single-family homes and multifamily, dropped 11.3% month over month in August to 1.283 million units on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to Census Bureau data released Tuesday. That's down 14.8% compared with a year ago and well below the 1.44 million units economists surveyed by Bloomberg projected.
But authorized residential permits — an indicator of potential future activity — rose 6.9% to 1.543 million permits in August from July. That was still down 2.7% from last August. Single-family permits, though, were up 2% from July to 949,000. Multifamily permits came in at 535,000.
The data reflects two opposing forces builders are trying to balance: the ongoing need for new construction to fill in limited inventory and elevated mortgage rates that are hurting their biggest customer right now, the first-time homebuyer.
"High mortgage rates are clearly taking a toll on builder confidence and consumer demand, as a growing number of buyers are electing to defer a home purchase until long-term rates move lower," Robert Dietz, chief economist of the National Association of Home Builders, said Monday in a press release after builder confidence dropped for the second straight month.

New orders for manufacturing technology in the United States totaled $353.9 million in July 2023, as per the latest report by AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology. This figure marked a 12.4% decline from June 2023 but remained only 10.5% lower than July 2022. Year-to-date orders amounted to $2.83 billion, reflecting a 12.7% decrease compared to the same period the previous year.
Douglas K. Woods, President of AMT, noted that July is typically a slower month for manufacturing technology orders, so a slight drop was expected. However, he pointed out a notable trend: over the last two months, the year-to-date order gap has narrowed during historically slow periods. While job shops have seen decreased orders, other industries that benefited from reshoring or government investments have helped fill the gap.
Among specific sectors, job shops, the largest customer segment, placed their lowest total monthly orders since August 2020. In contrast, metal valve manufacturers recorded their third-highest monthly order value on record, last seen in September 2018, making up nearly 5% of the total manufacturing technology order value for July 2023. Manufacturers of motor vehicle transmissions continued to order machinery at an elevated pace. However, the aerospace industry continued to order below its early 2022 peaks, with hopes that recent projects like the federal government's $1.5 billion investment in communications satellites might reverse this trend.

Stocks fell Friday as investors wrap up a volatile week ahead of the Federal Reserve's policy meeting.
The Dow Jones Industrials tumbled 288.87 points to close out Friday and the week at 34,618.24. At its lows, it completely wiped out Thursday's 332-point rally.
The S&P 500 index sank 54.78 points, or 1.2%, to 4,450.32.
The NASDAQ index plunged 217.72 points, or 1.6%, to 13,708.33.
The Dow held onto a winning week. The S&P 500 and NASDAQ both closed out the week with losses.
Information technology was the worst-performing sector in the S&P 500, down nearly 2%. Adobe shares fell more than 4% even after the software firm posted better-than-expected quarterly results. Shares of Arm Holdings were lower one day after its successful public debut.
Auto stocks General Motors and Stellantis N.V. were higher Friday, while Ford Motor was about flat. Thousands of members of the United Auto Workers went on strike after failing to reach a deal with the automakers Thursday night.
Elsewhere, Lennar shares slid 3%. The home construction firm posted third-quarter results that beat on the top and bottom lines.
On the economic front, the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment survey showed one-year inflation expectations dropped to 3.1% in
September, tied for the lowest since January 2021. Also, the five-year outlook fell to 2.7%, matching its lowest since December 2020.

Burning coal—for electricity, as well as metallurgy and cement production—is the world’s single largest source of CO2 emissions. Nevertheless, its use in electricity generation has actually grown 91.2% since 1997, the year when the first global climate agreement was signed in Kyoto, Japan.
However, even as non-renewables enjoy their time in the sun, their days could be numbered.
In 2022, renewables, such as wind, solar, and geothermal, represented 14.4% of total electricity generation with an extraordinary annual growth rate of 14.7%, driven by big gains in solar and wind. Non-renewables, by contrast, only managed an anemic 0.4%.
The authors of the Statistical Review do not include hydroelectric in their renewable calculations, even though many others, including the International Energy Agency, consider it a “well-established renewable power technology.”
With hydroelectric moved into the renewable column, together they accounted for over 29.3% of all electricity generated in 2022, with an annual growth rate of 7.4%.
