Eco tourism and camping tourism are growing industries in India. Eco tourism focuses on appreciating nature and culture while protecting the environment. Popular eco destinations include Kerala backwaters, Munnar and Thenni in Kerala, Periyar National Park, Coorg in Karnataka, Chilika Lake in Odisha, and Galgibaga Beach in Goa. Camping tourism allows visitors to experience nature in India's varied landscapes. Popular camping destinations include West Ladakh Camp, Watermark Camp on Pangong Lake, Sarchu on the Manali-Leh highway, and Royal Rajasthan Camp near Pushkar for desert camping. Both industries aim to promote conservation while providing economic opportunities for local communities.
Ecotourism involves small scale and sustainable tourism that aims to protect local environments and cultures. It employs local residents as guides and uses local materials like mud and streams in building low-rise lodges. Ecotourism respects local cultures and environments by limiting water and energy use, avoiding purchases of endangered goods, using non-polluting transport, and leaving areas undisturbed. For example, an ecotourism resort may generate income for conservation while giving jobs to local guides and input to local communities through homestays that experience the culture without overtaxing resources.

Eco-tourism management in Rajaji National Park, Uttarakhand (India)BASIX
Eco-tourism:Perhaps the most over-used and mis-used word in the travel industry. But what does it mean? The Ecotourism Society defines it as "responsible travel to natural areas which conserves the environment and improves the welfare of the local people". A walk through the rainforest is not eco-tourism unless that particular walk somehow benefits that environment and the people who live there. A rafting trip is only eco-tourism if it raises awareness and funds to help protect the watershed. A loose interpretation of this definition allows many companies to promote themselves as something that they are not. If true eco-tourism is important to you, ask plenty of questions to determine if your trip will help "conserve and improve" the places you visit.
1) The document discusses protected areas, their importance, and how to effectively manage them. Protected areas provide valuable ecosystem services like fresh water, fisheries, tourism, and cultural/religious sites.
2) Protected areas need to be well managed with trained staff, technology, and community support to conserve biodiversity and deliver benefits to people.
3) A system plan can coordinate protected areas nationally to ensure ecosystem services, wildlife protection, and nature benefits for all citizens.
This document discusses the concept of ecotourism. It begins with defining tourism and listing different types of tourism in India. Ecotourism is defined as responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves local well-being. The history and principles of ecotourism are outlined. Major ecotourism destinations in India and abroad are listed, including Kerala, the Himalayas, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Costa Rica, and Kenya. A case study of Thenmala Eco Tourism in Kerala is provided. Challenges of ecotourism include environmental degradation and lack of local benefits. Solutions involve community participation, limiting visitors, and efficient coordination between governing bodies.
Tonle Sap Lake is located in Cambodia and is the largest lake in Southeast Asia, covering an area of 13,000 km2. It provides 75% of Cambodia's inland fish and supports over 1.2 million people through fishing and agriculture. However, the lake is threatened by pollution from floating villages whose residents wash clothes and dispose of waste in the water. This pollution kills fish and birds and creates health problems. Solutions proposed include educating villagers on clean practices, building toilets, cleaning the water, and strengthening fishing laws.
Ecotourism involves environmentally and socially responsible tourism that benefits local environments and communities economically. It focuses on small scale and low impact activities like trekking that expose visitors to natural areas in a way that conserves resources and respects local cultures. Done properly, ecotourism can contribute to sustainable development by improving living standards for local people through jobs and infrastructure while protecting environments for future generations.
