The cam and follower is a device that converts rotary motion into linear motion. A cam has different shaped lobes that push against a follower to move it up and down in a linear path. Common cam profiles include pear, heart, circular, and drop shapes. Followers can have different designs like knife edges, flat feet, offsets, and rollers to interact with the cam lobes. Cams are used in engines to control valve movement and in pumps to power linear reciprocating motions.
