2. Campylobacter fetus
Microaerophilic
spiral,mobile gram
negative,rod growing at
37°.
Gender: Campylobacter
Species: fetus
Cause bacteremia and
extraintestinal infections in
humans and in domestic
animals
The main mechanism of
pathogenicity is invasion of
the intestinal mucosa
The transmission has been associated with contaminated food and transmission
between adults or from parents to children
52)
Edad de 56-67
años (mediana
60)
7. Resultados
Figure 1. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns
of 20 Campylobacter fetus (17 isolates from
CHUM and 3 other isolates) with SmaI and KpnI
enzymes, documented in Montreal, Quebec,
Canada, 2014–2016. Scale bar indicates
percentage similarity. Abbreviations: CHUM,
Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal;
p, pulsovar.
8. Estudio de 13 hombres los
cuales se les identifico, por
medio de la PFGE, la presencia
de la Campylobacter Fetus
utilizando las enzimas SMAI y
KNPI.
12 de ellos positivo
con las dos enzimas,
solo uno de ellos
positivo solo con
SMAI.
Adquirieron la infección en
sus comunidades,
12 de ellos tienen relaciones
sexuales con otros hombres
11 han practicado sexo en clubs gays y reclutan compañeros gays por internet.
9. Representa un riesgo mas
elevado la bacteriemia que la
gastroenteritis causada por C.
fetus
3 pacientes con
bacteriemia
2 presentan aneurisma
aórtico abdominal rota
e infectado
1 presenta hemorragia
renal causada por
células renales
cancerígenas
10 pacientes con gastroenteritis tratados efectivamente

“Among MSM with high-risk sexual
practices, enteric infections, often in clusters,
caused by Giardia lamblia, Shigella spp.,
Salmonella typhi, Campylobacter spp.,
Helicobacter cinaedi, and Helicobacter
fennelliae have been reported”

“Campylobacter fetus infections are
associated with a significantly higher rate of
bacteremia and morbidity compared with
those caused by other Campylobacter
species”

“Enteric Campylobacter spp., Helicobacter
cinaedi,and H. fennelliae infections
to be sexually transmitted in MSM and
cluster isolates have been described
including a case control study of
Campylobacter coli outbreak and a long-
lasting outbreak of erythromycin- and
ciprofloxacin-resistant Campylobacter jejuni
subspecies jejuni (our unpublished data).
MSM should be counseled about methods
for prevention of STIs including enteric

“In this population, outbreaks of sexually
transmitted Shigella have been reported in
many countries and Salmonella typhi
has also been previously documented”
12. • Campylobacter fetus is a microorganism that reproduces easily in
immunosuppressed patients, because in the literature has been
reported a few cases of infections with this bacterium.
• The majority of C.fetus infections have been reported in the
homosexual Community because they are under social pressure and it´s
make that they have sexual relations with men and women. With this
situation it´s most probability to adquire HIV.
Conclusions
13. • Although reported cases of person-to-person transmission are a few
should be taken into account the habits of patients involved as having
sex man with man because the bacterium is in the fecal matter and it´s
easier to infect the other people by anal sex.
• This bacterium behaves like an opportunistic bacterium which is evident
in patients who are infected because all of them are
immunosuppressed.
