1. The All Party Parliamentary Group on Disability invites written
submissions addressing the following questions and themes to inform its
inquiry into how the Government can fulfil its pledge to halve the
disability employmentgap.
Community,redeployment and self-employment:
● How can disabled people be helped to cluster and exchange their
skills with one another to supportmore to work or start
businesses? (Can people with fluctuating conditions job share?
Can micro-businesses be formed from skill share schemes? What
is required to facilitate this?)
● More disabled people than non-disabled people are self-employed.
What are the reasons for this, what businesseshave they started,
which ones are growing and why? What further support would
make a difference to their viability and the disabled person’s
quality of life?
Technology and accessibility
● How can research and developmentgrants equip more disabled
people to work? (for instance, speechactivated software has
helped blind people, but what might be possible from software that
helps blind people to skim read on selectedwords or information?
Could technology convert speechto sign and from sign back to
speechforthe deaf and hearing impaired people?)
Markets and job creation
● How many jobs does current Government supportto the private
sectorcreate and what is the scope forethical and responsible
procurementpolicies to create jobs for disabled people?
● What might the contribution to halving the disability employment
gap look like from the areas of the economy predicted to grow the
most, e.g. tech start up, financial technology, flood defence, virtual
reality, etc? What tailored policies would be required to see jobs be
fairly available and taken by disabled people?
