C1.23 - Crude Oil and start of Distillation column.ppt

Crude Oil - a new topic
Lesson success criteria?
• Understand that crude oil
is a mixture of
hydrocarbon molecules.
• Know that hydrocarbons
are compounds that
contain carbon and
hydrogen only.
• Describe crude oil as a
fossil fuel and recall its
formation.
• Be able to explain the
reasons for fraction
isolation in terms of boiling
point and carbon chain
Objective: By the end of the
lesson I will be able to…
describe what crude oil is and
recall its uses, so that? On your whiteboards:
Get into the fossil
fuels groove…
Mind map…
What are fossil fuels
and how are
they formed?

2. Developed criteria
for determining the
relative impact of
the social, economic
and environmental
effects of extracting
oil or oil sands.

Produce a flowchart in your books to show how
crude oil was formed…

So, what is crude oil?
Crude oil is a mixture of molecules called HYDROCARBONS.
On your whiteboards -
which 2 elements make
up hydrocarbons?

hydrogen bonded

7. Fractional distillation of
crude oil: part 1
Lesson Objectives
• Recallthat crude oil is a
mixture of hydrocarbon
molecules.
• Describethat hydrocarbons are
compounds that contain carbon
and hydrogen only
• Be able to explain the reasons
for fraction isolation in terms
of boiling point and carbon
chain length.
Lesson Menu
• Hydrocarbon
formation.
• Testing your memories
• Classifying your terms
• The fractional
distillation column
• Retest knowledge.

8. On your whiteboards…
Write all the key words that you associate with…
Crude oil
Support: structure, separation, formation…
Please don’t rub off your answers… turn your board over

10. Now write them down on
the other side of your WBs
• You’ve got 1 minute!
• Go!
• See how many more you managed to
get out of 11.

11. 5 minutes to link your terms to
definitions on the sheets provided…

12. In pairs…
• One faces the board (person A)
• The other sits with their back to them
(person B)
• Person A is going to describe a fractional
distillation column to person B.
• Person B: You’re going to draw it.
• You have 4 minutes to get as much detail in
as you can.
• A prize for the best diagram!
• Person B - NO LOOKING!
THINK: Capital- full sentence- full stop!
14. Have a look at the board…
• How did you do with the diagram?
• Top of the fractional distillation column has
the short chained Hydrocarbon molecules
that are very volatile, with low boiling points
and therefore ignite very easily! Less
viscous.
• Hottest point of the column is the bottom,
where thick dense long chain molecules
remain. Opposite properties than top of
column! THINK: Capital- full sentence- full stop!
15. New page…
• Individually - 4 minutes to draw the
column.
• Identify each fraction.
• Put fractions in the correct order.
• Link each fraction to a use…
• Prize/ star for the best image!!
THINK: Capital- full sentence- full stop!
16. To finish off…
• Repeat the starter… let’s raise your
knowledge by 50%
Write all the key words that you associate with
Crude oil…
Hint: structure, separation, formation,
fractions, uses
